Subject: Celebrating Rotherhithe - London Bubble and Bright Star
Dear Kam, Hope alls well with you. Am writing to you to give you a bit of interesting news – Academy Award winner director Jane Campion’s latest release, Bright Star was rehearsed at the London Bubble. The production team was in our building in March 2008, rehearsing for the film which tells the story of a secret love affair begins between 23 year-old English poet, John Keats, and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne. We suspect they chose the venue because of its feel - proximity to the river, close to St Mary’s church, very period feel to the area, the right inspiration to the setting of the film. Am attaching an image from the rehearsal showing Jane giving notes to actors. The image has been released to us by Bright Star Films. You might already know that London Bubble offers various spaces for hire to a range of artists and visiting companies. Its rehearsal spaces are popular amongst theatre companies from across the UK who find its central location in quiet Rotherhithe very accessible. Apart from hosting visiting companies, it also offers office facilities to the London School of Samba, famous for their participation in the Notting Hill Carnival. We also offer local residents an opportunity to stay within the community and currently Rotherhithe resident Gian Codemo is our artist- in- residence. Thanks and regards Shipra Producer Registered in England & Wales as the Bubble Theatre Company Ltd. at 5 Elephant Lane, London SE16 4JD Participate in ASTRONOMICAL - A CITY OF DARKER SKIES, our intergenerational performance project for ages 9 upwards Bright Star was nominated for the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2009.

Dear Andie
1) Green Flag Award 2009 - 2010 - Russia Dock Woodland
Welcome home and I hope you had a most enjoyable holiday. Thank you for choosing to make available my special 10-page photo report on the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland (FRDW) Website. I have enjoyed preparing the report and have received some very positive feedback and comments on the report. The reader's feedback from Rebeka Clark (Stave Hill Ecology Park (SHEP) Site Manager) meant a great deal to me and I would like to share her kind email below with you and other recipients/readers of this email. People like yourself, Rebeka Clark, Paul Highman and Steve Cornish have worked so hard for so long to help make RDW and SHEP what they are now for all to enjoy, I felt real good that Rebeka told me she liked my personal report of our historic 'Success Story'. I felt my humble efforts have been worth it as a little 'Thank You Gift of Goodwill'. If it is not too much to ask for, I would be more grateful if you can change the credit to the photographer of the Group Photo you posted on the FRDW Website today from me to Jerry Hewitt (Secretary of Hawkstone Tenants & Residents Association). I could not have taken that photo and appeared on the right edge of the photo at the same time - albeit you might not have spotted me who have half-succeeded in staying out of the public glare! Our collective 'Green Flag' success story appeared in today's Southwark News and hopefully in The Docklands 24 next Wednesday. 2) The London Bubble Theatre's 6-8's Theatre Group - Request for Publicity for 6-8's Theatre Group
The London Bubble Theatre Company has given two successful public performance of 'Bugs and Slugs' by local children in Russia Dock Woodland on 18 July 2009. It was another of our collective community-building success story to help protect and promote Environment, Ecology and Conservation (EEC) in Rotherhithe that have the fully backing of FRDW, Friends of Stave Hill and Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum (RCSF). Beatrice and I have enjoyed the watching show and please find attached my favourite RDW's 'Bugs and Slugs' photo which can also be accessed for online viewing and download via the web link : http://www.flickr.com/photos/16999050@N00/3769985285/
I am keen to honour my public pledge on behalf of RCSF to support the ongoing 'Save London Bubble Campaign'. I would be most grateful if you could help publicise London Bubble's latest offering to the Young People of Rotherhithe as detailed in Shipra's email below of 10 September 2009 @ 3:56 PM and the related poster attached herewith. Please note that I have created a London Bubble's Master Index of Records (Photos and Press Reports, etc) that can be accessed via the web link : http://rotherhithe0003.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4337256240820D27!440.entry
Shipra
I hope you and your new born are well. Your email below has arrived at a perfect time for me to help 'Spread the Word'. I am pleased to learn that you have already informed Southwark News and Docklands 24 direct. I will add Ian Moore (Surrey Quays Shopping Centre Manager), Will Pavia (former Southwark News Reporter) of The Times Newspaper and South London Press as recipients of this email to request for their help also. Beatrice and I remain impressed and grateful for the continual good hard work of London Bubble and we look forward to hearing further from you and Jonathan Petherbridge.
Jerry : You may be pleased to learn that one of your group photos of last Thursday has caught the keen photographer's eyes of FRDW's Web Editor, Andie and is now available for all to see via the FRDW Website : http://www.russiadockwood.ukfriends.com/html/recent_news.html Steve Cornish told me that fresh underground water is now flowing well under Peter Hill's Bridge where you and others (Beatrice, Steve Cornish, Alan & Ann Chadborn (Surrey Docks City Farm, The City Hope Church (Bermondsey)), etc., .... have generously volunteered your precious time in answer to Rebeka's RDW BIG TIDY UP call on 22 August 2009. Thank you again for all you have done.
Stephanie : Thanks to FRDW's Web Editor, Andie, your preferred group photo is now on public display for all to see! Thank you again to you and Jim and Southwark Friends of The Earth for your continual strong support for our collective and ongoing EEC efforts to help build a safer, more caring and more giving Rotherhithe Community where people will want to live, visit and work. Dear Friends
You may have already heard of the great news from the Green Flag Award Website ( http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk/winners/GSP003454/ ), Andie Byrnes (Web Editor, Friends of Russia Dock Woodland) ( http://www.russiadockwood.ukfriends.com/ ) or Steve Cornish (Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland) direct. For those who wish to find out more about the latest good news, please find attached a 2-page screen shots for your easy reference and to help Spread the Words as you see fit.
Many people and organisations have worked tirelessly over the years to help promote Environment, Ecology and Conservation in Russia Dock Woodland and its adjoining Stave Hill Ecology Park, including hundreds of volunteers, both local and further afield. This included the much-loved London Bubble Theatre ( http://www.londonbubble.org.uk/ ) that has worked collaboratively with Rebeka Clark (Site Manager, Stave Hill Ecology Park) and Steve Cornish on the first ever youth theatre production in Russia Dock Woodland, with two well-attended afternoon shows of "Slugs & Bugs" performed by local children on 18 July 2009 (Saturday). Please see attached an exclusive photo (Web Link : http://www.flickr.com/photos/16999050@N00/3769985285/ ) of this joyous public event which Jonathan Petherbridge, London Bubble's Creative Director, has kindly given permission for its publication.

Dear Kam,
Thank you for your email dated 18/04. Unfortunately we cannot speak for Southwark Friends of the Earth, but on a personal basis we fully support the Bubble Theatre and associated projects and we'll forward this bit of your emai to our co-ordinator to get his opinion before we confirm support from the group. It shouldn't be a problem but as you'll understand we cannot make this sort of decision on our own.

Stephanie and Jim

Dear Jonathan
Thank you for the kind receipt acknowledgement email below.
I am pleased to report 5 "Email Read Receipts" of my last "Marketing & PR Circular" for London Bubble from "Southwark People of Influence" as shown below .
I am keen to continue to try my humble best to support the vitally important "Save London Bubble Campaign". My wife, Beatrice, is the UK Marketing Information Manager for one of the best known global luxury brands groups. Bea likes my suggestion made to you via my email yesterday of "Guest Appearances" by big "Crowd Pullers" like Val Shawcross AM and Simon Hughes MP. This is nothing new in terms of a marketing strategy for some of the biggest and most successful global TV shows like the comedy series "Friends" and the cartoon series "The Simpsons" have both used it numerous times to great benefit for all concerned. I am sure the press would love to see it happen and lend their support. In addition to inviting top politicians for making "Guest Appearances", perhaps it may be worth exploring the potential opportunity of inviting some local school headteachers and deputy headteachers also which may help attract a bigger attendance of local school pupils and their friends and families. I know Ian MacNormandy is a local school headteacher that is also an active member of the London Bubble and that the Deputy Headteacher at St. John's School, Vera Jajechnyk, is full of praises for London Bubble's works. Alfred Salter School seems very keen on promoting "Performance Arts". No doubt you will have a lot more information of potential "helpers" that may be identified to be approached direct to seek their support.
I have no telling yet if Val and Simon like my suggestion and if they are happy to make brief "Guest Appearances" to help sell the show tickets and pull in the crowd. However, I am grateful and heartened that they were the first two persons who read my last email and kindly sent their "Email Read Receipts" on a late Friday evening as shown below. I am copying them on this email to continue to keep them informed and I trust they will contact you direct to offer further help as they see fit.
Southwark News are very good in helping promote worthwhile "Community Projects". I am copying this email to their Joint Managing Directors, Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn, for their information. Ian Moore, Manager of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, is also a strong supporter of "Save London Bubble Campaign". Stephanie & Jim Lodge of Southwark Friends of The Earth may also be happy to promote the shows in London Parks.
Best of luck for the busy working weekend for you and your advisors. Bea and I keenly look forward to finding out the 5 shows that will be shortlisted for final "Public Discussions".
On a separate but somehow related project, I trust Steve Cornish (Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland) and Rebeka Clark (Stave Hill Ecology Park Site Manager) will lend their full support for the first every Youth Theatre Performance in Russia Dock Woodland on 18 July 2009 (Saturday).
As always, please let me know if you require my assistance.
All best wishes Kam

Dear Jonathan In response to your email below of 15 April 2009 @ 6:50 PM, I have today made most but not all the postings that I intended for "The Wizard of Oz" via the Fan Made Theatre Website - probably due to website postings limit. Please not that I have made suggestions for "Guest Appearance" by Val Shawcross AM and Simon Hughes MP in the show as explained below in the section titled ""THE WIZARD OF OZ" : 2 GUEST APPEARANCES ?" The postings I have succeeded in making today are shown below in two Groups : (1) and (2). Please also see the last two intended postings (Scenario (6) and Scenario (7)) at the end of this email which I could not make despite numerous attempts. Please let me know if you require clarification on what I have done or other information. All best wishes Kam FAN MADE THEATRE WEBSITE POSTING GROUP (1) : "THE PROPOSALS EXPLAINED SECTION" (6 ENTRIES) "Wizard of Oz" is one of the best known and best loved of all modern fairy tales. It is a magical story of the adventures a young girl, Dorothy, and her four companions (the "Woodman" (looking for "Brain"), the "Scarecrow" (looking for "Heart") and the "Cowardly Lion" (looking for "Courage")) during their enchanting journey along the "Yellow Brick Road" in a strange, colourful and sometimes frightening land to the "City of Emerald" in search of the wonderful "Wizard of Oz". SCENARIO (1) Dorothy is a young girl who lives on a Kansas farm in the year 1889 with her Uncle Henry, Aunt Em, and little dog Toto. One day the farmhouse, with Dorothy inside, is caught up in a tornado and deposited in a field in the country of the Munchkins. The falling house kills the Wicked Witch of the East. The Good Witch of the North comes with the Munchkins to greet Dorothy and gives Dorothy the Silver Shoes that the Wicked Witch of the East had been wearing when she was killed. In order to return to Kansas, the Good Witch of the North tells Dorothy that she will have to go to the "Emerald City" and ask the Wizard of Oz to help her. On her way down the road paved with yellow brick, Dorothy frees the Scarecrow from the pole he is hanging on, restores the movements of the rusted Tin Woodman with an oil can, and encourages them and the Cowardly Lion to journey with her and Toto to the Emerald City. The Scarecrow wants to get a brain, the Tin Woodman a heart, and the Cowardly Lion, courage. All are convinced by Dorothy that the Wizard can help them too. Together, they overcome obstacles on the way. SCENARIO (2) When the group arrives at the Emerald City, the Guardian of the Gates provides them with special green spectacles that will keep the brilliance of the Emerald City from blinding them. When each traveler meets with the Wizard, he appears each time as someone or something different. To Dorothy, the Wizard is a giant head; the Scarecrow sees a beautiful woman; the Tin Woodman sees a ravenous beast; the Cowardly Lion sees a ball of fire. The Wizard agrees to help each of them, but one of them must kill the Wicked Witch of the West who rules over the Winkie Country. As the friends travel across the Winkie Country, the Wicked Witch sends wolves, crows, bees, and then her Winkie soldiers to attack them but they manage to get past them all. Then, using the power of the Golden Cap, the Witch summons the Winged Monkeys to capture all of the travelers. When the Wicked Witch gains one of Dorothy's silver shoes by trickery, Dorothy in anger grabs a bucket of water and throws it on the Wicked Witch, who begins to melt. The Winkies rejoice at being freed of the witch's tyranny, and they help to reassemble the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. The Winkies love the Tin Woodman and they ask him to become their ruler, which he agrees to do after helping Dorothy return to Kansas. Dorothy uses the Golden Cap to summon the Winged Monkeys to carry her and her companions back to the Emerald City, and the King tells how they were bound by an enchantment to the cap by Gayelette. SCENARIO (3) When Dorothy and her friends meet the Wizard of Oz again, he tries to put them off. Toto accidentally tips over a screen in a corner of the throne room, revealing an old man who had journeyed to Oz from Omaha long ago in a hot air balloon. The Wizard provides the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion with a head full of bran, pins, and needles ("a lot of bran-new brains"), a silk heart stuffed with sawdust, and a potion of "courage", respectively. Because of their faith in the Wizard's power, these otherwise useless items provide a focus for their desires. In order to help Dorothy and Toto get home, the Wizard realizes that he will have to take them home with him in a new balloon, which he and Dorothy fashion from green silk. Revealing himself to the people of the Emerald City one last time, the Wizard appoints the Scarecrow, by virtue of his brains, to rule in his stead. Dorothy chases Toto after he runs after a kitten in the crowd, and before she can make it back to the balloon, the ropes break, leaving the Wizard to rise and float away alone. SCENARIO (4) Dorothy turns to the Winged Monkeys to carry her and Toto home, but they cannot cross the desert surrounding Oz. The Soldier with the Green Whiskers advises that Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, may be able to send Dorothy and Toto home. They, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion journey to Glinda's palace in the Quadling Country.
FAN MADE THEATRE WEBSITE POSTING GROUP (2) : "WHAT MAKES A GOOD SUMMER SHOW SECTION" (3 ENTRIES) WHY "THE WIZARD OF OZ" WILL MAKE A GREAT SHOW ?
THE WIZARD OF OZ - SCENARIO (5) (Continuation of postings first started in "The Proposals Explained Section" due to apparent postings limit of 6 entries only for each show) Together they escape the Fighting Trees, dodge the Hammer-Heads, and tread carefully through the China Country.
POSTING UNABLE TO BE MADE TO THE FAN MADE THEATRE WEBSITE (2 ENTRIES) THE WIZARD OF OZ - SCENARIO (6) The Cowardly Lion kills a giant spider, who is terrorizing the animals in a forest, and he agrees to return there to rule them after Dorothy returns to Kansas— the biggest of the tigers ruling in his stead as before. Dorothy uses her third wish to fly over the Hammer-Heads' mountain. THE WIZARD OF OZ - SCENARIO (7) At Glinda's palace, the travelers are greeted warmly, and it is revealed by Glinda that Dorothy had the power to go home all along. The Silver Shoes she wears can take her anywhere she wishes to go. She tearfully embraces her friends, all of whom will be returned, through Glinda's use of the Golden Cap, to their respective sovereignties: the Scarecrow to the Emerald City, the Tin Woodman to the Winkie Country, and the Cowardly Lion to the forest. Then she will give the Cap to the king of the Winged Monkeys, so they will never be under its spell again. Dorothy and Toto return to Kansas and a joyful family reunion. The Silver Shoes are lost during Dorothy's flight and never seen again. ----- Original Message -----

Dear Kam, Thank you very much for submitting a proposal to Fan Made Theatre. We will now look into the idea and give it full consideration. As you mention in your submission it would be useful if you send the full synopsis if that’s not too much trouble. In the meantime It would help us, and the other Stakeholders, if you could place any further information or ideas you have about your proposal on the discussion board. It would be good to know a bit about the scenario. Tell everyone why you think it would make a great show, and try to drum up support. And don’t be afraid to question anyone else’s ideas – help fan the Fan Made flames. Thanks again and stay in touch with developments, Jonathan Petherbridge Creative Director Plus the advisory team: Alice, Thomas, Jane, Ian, Nicole and Amit.

By L. Frank Baum
I have just read all the online postings to date in the "What makes a good summer show?" Section and concur with Elliot Rose's strategy suggestion for a "Banker Show" this year to help maximise London Bubble's chance of success in "attracting", "entertaining" and "rewarding" the all-important "audience" in our ongoing "Save London Bubble Campaign". I would like this year's show to have a potential wide appeal to people from different age groups and all walks of life to make it "Fun" for all involve (actors, support workers and audience) as well as a much needed "Commercial Success". In view of the current economic climate, I particularly like a show of hard-earned triumph over seemingly impossible challenges by holding firm to and diligently putting my old school's motto "Love, Hope & Faith" into daily practice. I think the musical-fantasy "The Wizard of Oz" with its strong emphasis on "Brain", "Heart" and "Courage" can do the job nicely in a park land and woodland setting. "The Wizard of Oz" is well-known and well-loved by many and I just love the song "Over the Rainbow"!

___________________________________________________________________________ Dear All
London Bubble Theatre Company
Like everyone, I have heard in the last few hours that the Arts Council England are not going to continue funding the Bubble from April. In their letter, however, the Council does mention that a case for transitional funding could be made. This is clearly disappointing and sad news particularly given the widespread support the London Bubble received, including from you and from me.
I really think we could not have done more to change their minds. I have offered to meet again with Sandy Craig, Chair of the London Bubble Board of Trustees, both to discuss the matter of transitional funding and the immediate and longer term funding of the theatre.
I sincerely hope a way will be found to ensure the bubble continues to be a part of this community and is not burst by this decision.
Best Wishes
Simon Hughes MP

Subject: Save London Bubble Campaign : Urgent Request for Help Dear Friends
London Bubble Theatre Company ("London Bubble") is under threat following the Arts Council's decision to recommend a 100% cut in its funding. As part of its review of Regularly Funded Organisations, Arts Council England (ACE) has stated its intention not to renew its funding of London Bubble from 1 April 2008. If this recommendation is carried out, it is likely that London Bubble will be forced to wind up after 35 years in existence, during which time Londoners, as audiences and participants, have enjoyed London Bubble's work in parks, schools, theatres, youth settings and beyond. London Bubble is rallying public support to appeal against ACE's recommendation and it is my understanding that the deadline for appeal is 14 January 2008 (Monday).
Reportedly, 'Youth-Related Crime' is the most common Community Safety concern in the Rotherhithe Community Council Area. At a time when People of Rotherhithe are working hard to help secure more youth facilities, we are very concerned to hear about the potential closure of London Bubble. I am hereby writing to request your help to save The London Bubble Theatre Company and I will encourage other Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum Members to do likewise.
All best wishes

Subject: London Bubble to join Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum (RCSF)
Dear Kam, Thank you for your email to Jonathan Petherbridge, who has asked me to respond to you on his behalf. We would love to join the RCSF. Please let me know what the formalities are. I would be the London Bubble representative for the forum.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support on getting the word out, and believing in us! It really mattered to us, lifted us up when everything else was looking down. So thank you.
Look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards Shipra Ogra Arts Projects Coordinator, London Bubble Theatre Company, 5 Elephant Lane, London SE16 4JD Arts Council, England has confirmed that it is withdrawing its funding of London Bubble from April 2008. The full implications of this loss of funding are not yet clear, and the company is currently looking at ways in which it may be able to continue in some form. "London Bubble Saved From Closure After Funding Cut" [Source : Southwark News @ 20-3-2008 (Page 17)] The highly popular London Bubble Theatre Company has specially requested Southwark News to help thank its many supporters for the "Save London Bubble Campaign" in the past few months that have help persuaded Arts Council England (ACE) to provide a Transitional Funding which made it possible for London Bubble to continue its works. However, London Bubble will need to implement a major staff redundancy programme, parring back its current work force of 8 people to 3 full-time employees and cancel its traditional, well attended and well remembered "Tour of Parks" in the area in 2008. The goal of London Bubble is to rebuild itself and continue to serve the community like it has done in the last 35 years. Jennie Clarke, (London Bubble Marketing Officer) said : "The biggest change people will notice is that the summer tour is being cancelled". Despite the cuts, London Bubble is now launching their new programme "Creative Theatre" which they hope will be successful enough to enable them to seek alternative funding over the coming months and years. This new programme includes schemes called "Creative Literacy" and "Speaking Out" as well as the "ReAct Project" which will be rolled out at schools across the company's SE London catchment area and cultiminate with a series of open air performances at venues across the area. "Joy As Bubble Rises Again" - South London Press on 18 March 2008 (Page 12)
The London Bubble Theatre Company can stay open for another 2 years thanks to a transitional grant from Arts Council England (ACE) and an extra £17,000 from Southwark Council. 7 staff will be laid off but London Bubble is given a certain amount of time to attract more funding from other sources.
Jonathan Petherbridge (London Bubble - Artistic Director) thanked the entire community for the support was crucial in winning over the ACE.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rotherhithe Bubble Burst (Southwark News @ 18-2-2008)
Rotherhithe's London Bubble Theatre Company is considering its future, after savage funding cuts were rubber stamped this week by the Arts Council. The cuts, which were originally proposed at the start of the year, are now confirmed and with no further opportunity to appeal, the company is now talking about potential 'bridge' funding to enable it to carry on operating beyond April. Speaking to the 'News' this week, the Bubble's marketing officer Jenni Clarke said: "There will definitely definitely be changes at London Bubble, but hopefully there could be a way out of this. It's a bit uncertain but the future is not as bleak as we thought it might have been. "The board of management have met with key funders - including the Arts Council - to look at other ways of keeping the company afloat. We have also met with the three local councils we work with to look at ways of securing the future of our education work. "We are almost certain we are going to have to downscale and it is likely there are going to be job cuts. However, a very, very reduced company could still be operating for the next few years. "The company could return in its current form, but that is maybe something that will be a few more years down the track." North Southwark and Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes reacted angrily to the funding news, saying: "Like everyone, I have heard with anger and sadness that Arts Council England are not going to continue funding the London Bubble Theatre from April this year. In the letter announcing their decision, the Arts Council does however mention 'that a case for transitional funding could be made. "This is very disappointing and sad news, particularly given the widespread support for London Bubble from many children, young people and adults living locally, as well as councillors, London Assembly members and the Mayor of London. "I really think we could not have done more to change their minds and sincerely hope a way will be found to ensure that this Bubble continues to be a part of this community and is not burst by this decision." As requested, please find attached (and pasted below) a version which I have managed to edit down to around 280 words. I hope this is OK. If you need anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks and best wishes, Elliot Rose Marketing Director
Dear London Bubble Supporters, You may have heard that Arts Council England has confirmed that it will not be renewing London Bubble's funding from April, despite a huge campaign involving hundreds of letters and emails of support from all parts of London, from all ages and from all sections of the community. The company is shocked by the decision and its implications. We feel that we play a vital role in our local community, providing opportunities for hundreds of participants from 5 to 75+ years old to make theatre, focussing on introducing non-theatregoers to the joys of theatre, and developing long term relationships in primary and secondary schools across south east London and beyond. Whilst we don't dispute the Arts Council's right to make cuts, we are disappointed by the outcome, and now have to deal with the very short notice that puts us in an extremely difficult position. We'd like to thank everyone who has supported London Bubble through the past two months. We are now focussed on the future and are currently looking at ways in which the company can continue in some form, and then start the process of rebuilding. In the meantime, there are things you can do:

- "Funding Cut will Kill Off Local Theatre" (Southwark News @ 24-12-2007)
A Southwark theatre may be forced to close, following a shock announcement by the Arts Council that it could pull the theatre's funding in the New Year.
The London Bubble Theatre Company, based in Elephant Lane, Rotherhithe, has been running for 35 years, and has been given just four weeks to appeal against the decision. Jonathan Petherbridge, Artistic Director of London Bubble Theatre Company, said: "We are appalled by Arts Council England's decision. The assessment process is undemocratic. The Arts council are setting themselves up as judge and jury. They haven't looked at all the work we do in schools and they take no notice of what children have to say about the work we do with them. If they cut our funding I would be very surprised if the provision of theatre in South London would be as good as it now." The Arts Council has expressed concerns about the quality of London Bubbles work. Catriona Macrae-Gibson, Head of Communications, said: "We are looking into funding other organisations that we feel in our judgment provide better quality work for children. Theatres would normally have a longer time to prepare their appeal against the decision, but we only had settlement from the government at the end of October. Ordinarily we receive settlement a full year before. We acknowledge how unfortunate and how uncomfortable this is." The theatre company currently works with 20 primary schools and thirteen secondary schools and has helped over 100 young people in South East London with GCSEs, A levels, Degrees, diplomas and apprenticeships. They were also set to launch a major project, with educational speech therapists, to help reception class teachers to improve literacy skills. Jenni Clarke, Marketing Officer, London Bubble Theatre Company, said: "None of these officers has seen our education work - a strand of work which is pioneering in its field and unrivalled in South East London." - "Theatre Group Face Funding Curtain Call" (South London Press @ 21-12-2007) A THEATRE group that launched the careers of Hollywood stars and has entertained thousands of people over more than 30 years could close.
The London Bubble Theatre Company, based in Elephant Lane, Rotherhithe, faces closure in four months' time after Arts Council England said it was cutting its funding completely. The group was formed in 1972 and helped kick-start the careers of actors including double-Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn and New Cross-born Gary Oldman. Its artistic director, Jonathan Petherbridge, said he was appalled by the decision. He said: "We are gobsmacked that they are threatening to completely cut London Bubble, which leads in terms of increasing engagement and participation. "We attract a very wide and diverse audience and a lot of people coming to our shows are visiting the theatre for the first time."
"We also get a lot of young people involved in theatre who would not otherwise."
The theatre runs four youth theatres, two adult groups, and works with 33 schools. Nicky Hyde, a 35-year-old teacher from West Dulwich, has been a group member for two years. She said it would be "terrible" if it had to close. She added: "It ch allenges you in an enjoyable way, it gives you confidence and an outlet for your frustrations. You get to work with professional actors and singers so you can develop your skills.
"It's not expensive, it's only £3.50 a session, and it's not pretentious. "You just bring yourself and have a good time - it's fantastic. It's not just for people who want to be actors. You get builders, secretaries, teachers - young and old. And as a teacher I know the work they do with the youth theatre is incredible."
Arts Council England has said it will stop funding the theatre from April 1, forcing the London Bubble to close. An Arts Council spokeswoman said: "We have had concerns about London Bubble for some time, and we have made them aware of this on a regular basis.
"We are dedicated to funding innovative, excellent work and unfortunately we feel that London Bubble is not delivering this.
"It is for this reason that we believe that public money is best invested elsewhere.
"However our commitment to high quality children's and young people's theatre continues, and is delivered across London by a number of Arts Council-funded organisations, including Hackney Empire, the Unicorn, the Young Vic, the National Youth Theatre and Albert and Friends."
The Bubble said it will appeal against the decision. From: Ami Ibitson

Subject: Southwark News Reader's Letter : A Very Special "Letter of Support" for "Save London Bubble Campaign" from a Top Class Playwright and Theater Professional Dear Theresa
Your very kind thank you letter below was very much appreciated and totally unexpected, especially knowing how busy you are with the final preparation for the all-important appeal to ACE. I too very much look forward to meeting you in person soon and hopefully with some good news to share and celebrate.
My mentor and trusted friend, Albert T. Viola (Al), has been closely following the "Save London Bubble Campaign" with great interest and kind concerns from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. Al is a well-known and well-respected theatre professional and has emailed me his "Letter of Support" as attached herewith for passing it on to you and all your colleagues at The London Bubble Theatre Company. Al told me to let you know that he understands, appreciates and fully endorses what The London Bubble Theatre Company has achieved to date and what you want to accomplish going forward, especially in terms of using "theatre-making" as an education and community-building tool. In fact, Al has done and is still doing exactly the same in the USA via the many projects that he is involved with. Al has read a copy of yesterday's Southwark News Report as attached herewith titled "Residents Leap To Defence of Under Threat Local Theatre" and he was moved to "create" his rather novel "Letter of Support" and requested me to pass it on to you and other recipients of this email to lend his voice to the "Save London Bubble Campaign". Al's credentials in theatre arts is too long to be stated in this email. Please find attached his biography which I have specially compiled for you using information publicly available from various websites as well as from my personal knowledge of Al and his professional works. Please feel free to use Al's "Letter of Support" as well as his biography for the "Save London Bubble Campaign" as you see fit without the need to seek his prior approval.
It is my sincere hope that you and your colleagues will welcome Al's Letter of Support and hopefully can put it to good use to help with the "Save London Bubble Campaign". I also hope that Southwark News will choose to publish Al's rather unusual "Reader's Letter" which I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. I strongly believe that it can help us to think about arts and theatre-making, what they are for and how they can help promote community-building and humanity at large - and last but certainly not least - "The Children of London".
All best wishes

As part of its review of Regularly Funded Organisations, Arts Council England (ACE) has stated its intention not to renew its funding of London Bubble Theatre Company from 1 April 2008. If this recommendation is carried out, it is likely that the company will be forced to wind up after 35 years in existence, during which time Londoners, as audiences and participants, have enjoyed London Bubble's work in parks, schools, theatres, youth settings and beyond. The London Bubble Theatre Company : Projects & Achievements
Takes theatre to outer London and has worked in all 33 London Boroughs Arts Council England state that their recommendation is based on concerns about the artistic quality of London Bubble's work, but none of the few Arts Council reports on London Bubble's work has rated it as poor, and there have been no reports on, or visits to, any of the company's education work. Independent reports have been very positive about the quality of the work.
London Bubble is appealing against the recommendation.
Jonathan Petherbridge, Artistic Director of London Bubble, states: "We are appalled by Arts Council England's decision. And we are gobsmacked that, while they are threatening to cut London Bubble, which leads in terms of increasing engagement and participation, at the same time Peter Hewitt, Chief Executive of ACE can write in Arts Industry that ‘Our recommendations also take into account our other priorities - the need to increase engagement and participation ...' (14 December 2007).

If this recommendation is accepted it will almost certainly lead to the winding up of the company. As a friend of London Bubble, we are urgently asking for your support to challenge this recommendation. You can help us by doing three things: Firstly by emailing your MP, London Assembly Member, and your local councillors, it will take approximately 2 minutes to do this. If you are unsure who your representatives are you can find it out by typing in your postcode into the following website www.writetothem.com Secondly by posting a message of support on the website www.londonbubble.org.uk so we can pass this onto the Arts Council And finally by sending on this email to anyone you think needs to know about this and can help us advocate for the company You are welcome to use any of the bullet points below to help make your case. At a time when both the Government and ACE are championing participation and greater diversity in the arts it seems wrong to cut an organisation that currently:works with 33 Primary and Secondary Schools and 1710 pupils each year on arts education projects: Creative Literacy - bringing creativity into the Literacy Hour Play What You Say - working with Early Years staff and children on story making and story acting Respect in Focus - working with children targeted by SENCO to increase social skills and confidence Jumping the Gap - transitional project between Primary and Secondary School ReAct 4 Respect - issue based forum theatre peer project for teenagers Runs four youth theatres, two adult theatre groups and one intergenerational band
Attracts 43% of participants from BMER (Black, Minority, Ethnic and Refugee) communities At a time when both the Government and ACE wish to nurture innovation it seems wrong to cut an organisation that: Is currently working, with educational speech therapists, helping class teachers to use theatre to develop speech and language skills Has pioneered and established both Forum and Promenade Theatre Is currently developing intergenerational projects involving elders, adults and children making theatre alongside each other to develop community cohesion At a time when both the Government and ACE are encouraging access to the arts it seems wrong to cut an organisation that: Offers young people from 5 years upwards a ladder of opportunity and pathways to seeing, making and appreciating theatre Has, in the last 3 years, helped over 100 young people from South East London with GCSE’s, A levels, Degrees, Diplomas and through work placements and practical apprenticeships – many of these young people have returned to the company Please help us by lobbying your elected representatives of the importance of London Bubble, to help reverse this recommendation and ensure a future for the company for all Londoners to enjoy.
