Please see attached two photos taken at 8am this morning. As you can see this seems to be a new challenge, with the burnt out motorbike taken from the fire-damaged Redriff Bridge hung high up on a tree in Russia Dock Woodland with nylon rope taken from the lifebuoy rings at Downtown Pond. It is right next to the public warning sign which says  "Riding of Motorbike is Prohibited" in the woodland and it is illegal. It looks to me as if these anti-social individuals were saying this is our sign of defiance.  I think that was why they have taken the time and effort to display the burnt out motorbike at the same height as the public warning sign.  This takes the reported problems onto a new level.  What a country we live in!

    Hello,

Someone will have to explain this absolute mess. We now have a burnt out motorbike on Redriff Bridge in Russia Dock Woodland which has caused extensive damage to the bridges decking and also some damage to the redriff schools newly erected name sculpture / logo.  this was obviously done in the early hours of the morning. The bridge needs looking at immediately to check whether it is safe for the public to use. several decking boards are burnt to a cinder and may collapse under pressure.

What is even more annoying is that I am absolutely certain that the motorbike in question is the one that I reported stolen nearly a week ago (HONDA EK55 YTD) which was at the back of the bakeries backing onto R.D.W.  The sequence of events since both the honda bike, and also bmw burnt out bike, were reported are disgraceful. After trying our hardest to inform the authorities through the correct channels, we end up with this mess, and something that should have been avoided.

The burnt out bike is an honda and some of the remnants of the bike are exactly the same colour and make as the one reported nearly a week ago. This bike has also caused damage to the Wild Flower Meadow in Stave Hill Eco Park last night. Parts of the damaged bike are all over the place, with deep tyre marks across the wild flower meadow.  There has also been an arson attack on the wooden plant containers in Stave Hill Eco Park around the small pond.

We have all reported the great success story of russia dock woodland over the last few years, but unfortunately this type of thing always raises it's head when the warmer weather comes.

(1)...Someone need to look at the bridge to check it's safety immediately

(2)...The burnt out bike needs to be removed ( I have pulled it from the bridge for safety reasons)

(3)...Someone needs to look into the sequence of events (some below) to sort out the obvious lack of communication between certain departments.

Despite this being reported on Monday at 09.30 a.m. and the various communications via this website, the burnt out Motorcycle is still
lying on the grass this morning (Thursday).

I also met Steve Cornish today, Steve told me where the abandoned Scooter was hidden between the tress and the Boots Chemists delivery yard, as there has been no action in four days regarding the burnt out motorcycle I decided that, rather than risk that also being set alight and the resultant effect of it damaging the woodland environment, it would be better for us all if it wasn't in the woodland.

I have dragged out and pushed it out of the woodland and parked it next to number 228 Brunswick Quay. I then rang the Police who have confirmed it has been stolen, the Police will be notifying the owner of its whereabouts, so that it may be recovered.

Regarding the suggestion that residents contact the CCTV operators so that cameras can be focused on the 'hot spot' when crime or
anti-social behaviour is occurring- I was unaware that this facility existed. Whereabouts is this telephone number displayed? I could not see anything on the camera itself. Perhaps Southwark Council will consider putting up notices regarding this and also perhaps could leaflet the local residents with this information as I am sure that they would be happy to contribute to anything that improves the
    'policing' of the neighborhood.

Steve they have promised to collect it tomorrow. In their defense they did collect two bikes (including the stolen one near the bakery), just a shame they got the wrong burnt bike!

    Hello David & Gerhold,

For your information ....The councils recovery lorry retrieved a burnt out motorcyle today at about 12.o clock. Unfortunately they have taken the wrong one. As I explained in the original e/mail, the burnt out motorbike was abandoned on 'russia dock woodland green'.
the recovery vehicle has taken the old burnt out bike that was on the Downtown Site at the back end of Downtown Road. This has been there for several months and was reported then. There has obviously been a communications problem which is generally the case.
On a wonderfull day like today it doesn't look good when parents and young children are picknicking on the green with the burnt out bike and of coarse the burnt grass spoiling their outlook. The burnt out bike and the abandoned/ stolen bike have been there since the weekend. Has the abandoned bike (EK55 YTD) Been reported stolen?..

    Kam,
This just in from the CCTV control room:

    Hi David,

Nothing was flagged up to us at the time so we're in the process of reviewing the tapes.

As you rightly said, if residents are contacting the Control Room when incidents are taking place then we stand a far better chance of getting evidence. If people are riding up and down in the area then this must be heard by someone.

Also, please assure the residents that all cameras are routinely used to patrol the Borough 24hrs of the day but we still need to be contacted to ensure we are using the correct camera at the right time.

Thanks for your help David and we'll update you on the review.

    Regards,

    Ian

    G'day Kam,

I sent a lengthy reply to Antony this morning but the FORDWL yahoo group system has not propagated the message yet?

Below follows the copy and paste version from that email:

    G'day Antony,

Thanks for the info. It was also reported by the community yesterday. Wardens reported it for removal yesterday too.

I am sorry that LBS has taken so long to remove it.

The parking team have just promised me that the burnt out bike will be removed today. While they are there, they will also collect the other stolen motor bike currently residing in RDWL.

Unfortunately it is not possible to use gates to prevent motorbikes gaining access to RDWL because double prams and wheel chairs still need to gain access to the woodland.

Mind you, a number of gates have been put in by LBS in the recent past, to slow these bikes down on the woodland's path ways and to create pinch points where these foolish bikers can be caught.

I will be pursuing the CCTV aspect. It is worth noting that the CCTV control room has dozens of live cameras to monitor in the borough and that particular camera swings through 360 degrees. Consequently it is very important that locals ring the CCTV control room number to report antisocial behaviour etc at the time, to ensure that the camera is pointing in the right direction!

    David & Barry

Further to your email exchanges with Steve Cornish on 3-3-2008 (Monday) some of which are shown below, I have noted this morning at about 8am that the reported Burnt Out Motorbike is still lying in the Open Green Space just off Waterman Walk at the far end on the left of the straight stretch of the Public Footpath if one enters RDW from the Redriff Road entrance. I have heard more and more Local Residents expressing their concerns regarding the this issue, including that by Antony of Rope Street via his web posting on the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland e-Forum yesterday (Web Link :
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/the_friends_of_russia_dock_woodland/message/1497  ) where he also complained about the perceived ineffectiveness of the CCTV in Crime Prevention as well as suggested that more Anti-Motorbike Barrier gates to be installed in RDW.  Can you please advice the expected date and time for the removal of the Burnt Out Motorbike and Abandoned Motorbike that Steve Cornish has reported to help update everyone and to help manage "Public Expectation"? It is my understanding that Southwark Council has/had an "1-Hour Removal Target" if Abandoned Motor Vehicles are found in Parks. Can you please confirm or advise? Many thanks.

    All best wishes

    Kam

Barry Duckett : Thank you for your email below of 24-2-2008 @ 12:02 and continual efforts in helping look after the Rotherhithe Community, including the waterways and other public open spaces.  I wonder if you have been introduced to Tracy Dickinson, the replacement for Phil Murphy?  I have found Tracy extremely helpful and a pleasure to work with.  Perhaps you may like to make direct contact with Tracy on her return from annual leave in about a week's time using her contact details below.

On a related matter, I have noted the rubbish bins just outside Canada Water Underground Station seem to be constantly full and sometimes suffer spillage.  I wonder if they are being emptied regularly or if we need more bins and/or more frequent emptying of them.  I would be most grateful if you could help check it out and advise us.  Many thanks.

Wonderful to see two great crested grebes http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/g/greatcrestedgrebe/index.asp  doing their unique courtship dance on Greenland Dock at 8.30am today.  Elegant aloof and beautiful birds.

Two such pairs nested on Greenland Dock last year, and another - 4 chicks - on Canada Water.

Another pair were yesterday to build a reedy nest on one of the round wooden island on the dock by the Redriff Road inlet. A similar nest got washed away in a rainstorm last spring - that's an occupational hazard with such low-nesting birds but our islands could do with raised circumference edges. BTCV?

    Best wishes.

Barry  :  Thank you for informing me of an "Oil Slick" from the Moby Dick Pub in Greenland Dock earlier this week per your email exchange with Cllr. Paul Noblet below.  Thankfully, all seemed well when I visited the site this morning as demonstrated by the 3 below-mentioned photos.

SteveFurther to your email below which I received on 15-2-2008 @ 1:00am, I have today seen something that looked like 'Nesting Material' made of Old Reed from Russia Dock Woodland that you reported on a big Nesting Pontoon in Greenland Dock as shown at the centre of the 3 photos I took this morning that can be accessed via the web link   http://rotherhithe0003.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4337256240820D27!163.entry   It was an impressive sight watching a pair of Mute Swans flying into and out of the water as shown in the photo on the left.  The number of seagulls shown in the photo on the right created a sense of "Seaside Feel" at Greenland Dock.  I am pleased to report that I have seen quite a few "Happy Faces" today at Greenland Dock, watching and enjoying the wildlife in Rotherhithe.

Ben & Rebeka :  Please let me know if you would like me to email you electronic copy of the photos.

    Dear Friends

Many thanks for your continual strong support and contribution to conservation, ecology and wildlife in Rotherhithe.  Some of you may have already heard that Stave Hill Ecology Park (SHEP) has decided to concentrate its effort to prepare for the £350,000 Heritage Funding Bid that has to be submitted in March 2008 and its assessment for the Green Pennants Award has been postponed until September 2008.  SHED has received a good number of "Letters of Support" included that from Cllr. Jenny Jones AM, Valerie Shawcross AM, Mickey Kelly (Head Teacher of Redriff Primary School), Rotherhithe Community Council and Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum.

Please see the "Good News" emails below from Ben Dewhurst (TRUE Manager) and Steve Cornish (Chair of the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland).  It is truly heartening to see the tremendous and increasing amount of collective efforts by people from all walks of life from both near and far to help make Rotherhithe a Cleaner, Greener and Safer place for all to enjoy.  Some say seeing is believing and a picture says a thousand words.  Please see the three attached photos taken by Sally Dowman (Friend of Stave Hill + Founder & Manager of Stave Hill Ecology Park Facebook Group) for your information.

    Subject:  Rafts into Surrey Water

    Hello All,

Yes, the nesting pontoons have started to be put into place at Surrey Water, and Greenland Dock. They have been made by volunteers at Lavander Pond, under the management of the Trust for Urban Ecology. There's a lot more to come as stated below by TRUE manager Ben Dewhurst.  These new 'floating nests' will hopefully solve the territorial problems of last year where several birds were unfortunately lost. One of the things that are often overlooked is 'nesting material' for the swans. moorhens, coots, etc. We have decided to cut back the old reeds at Russia Dock Woodlands ponds, and waterways, and deposit them into Surrey Water. This was very successful last year.  We will be cutting the reeds back today, and also the beginning of next week, then transferring them to Surrey Water next thursday.

The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland, along with the Trust for Urban Ecology, have met this week with representatives of the nationally renowned Wildlife and Wetlands Trust to discuss the very strong possibility of getting funding through different agencies, to use the wasted rainwater from over 100 houses that run parallel with the woodlands waterways, then to contain the water in either 'eco chambers' or small ponds, strategically placed throughout the woodland, that will then feed the waterways down 'mini gully waterfalls' under 'small boardwalks' along the brick pathways.

This is at an early stage, but with the backing of Southwark Council ( our local councillors have already been informed of the idea and principle) and of course the Local Community we are very hopeful of a positive outcome. Plans have already been drawn up, and will be made available to the wider community very shortly. The Wildlife and Wetlands Trust were very, very, impressed with the set up of the woodlands and felt it is an 'ideal venue' for this exciting new sustainable water supply to RDWs flourishing wildlife habitat.  they were particularly impressed with our local schoolchildren being involved 'hands on' with recent long term projects, such as the making, and erecting. of over 100 bird, and bat boxes, and also their involvement with helping to make, and erect, the five school bridge sculptures under the guidance of our local surrey docks farm blacksmith (kevin boys)...

Anyway, there are new and exciting things to come in and around Russia Dock Woodland and Stave Hill Eco Park very soon.
So, WATCH THIS SPACE AND HELP SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS...

    regards steve...

As always the residents that live around around russia dock woodland will be on the lookout for this "lowlife behaviour" and eventually? catch and punish those responsible?. We have c.c.t.v. all over the place now, which has cost thousands of pounds. It shouldnt be long before we have results?... the good news is that the flytipped rubbish was cleared first thing this morning. please note that the friends of russia dock woodland A.G.M. will be held at the Y.H.A. Philip :  Please see the Local Intelligence Report Email below from a Downtown Resident, Sue Agnew, and offer us your assistance - especially in relation to the prompt removal of flytipping and potential Southwark Council's Crime Surveillance CCTV Footage that may be available.  I will hereby request Sue to contact you direct to supply further information as she sees fit.  I would be most grateful if you could keep Sue and me informed of the progress.  Many thanks.

Rotherhithe Community Wardens :  If possible, can you please help arrange for the prompt removal of the flytipping over the weekend to help prevent "Fire Risk" that many Downtown Residents are becoming increasingly fearful of as a result of the recent arson incidents in the neighbourhood?

SueThank you for your Local Intelligence Report Email below.  Can you please advise what sort of rubbish has been flytipped this time and advise of the exact location?  As you have requested, please note the two contact details below for your future reference.  Under normal circumstances, we should contact "Southwark Council Environment Centre" direct without bothering "Phil Murphy".  However, in this case, I would recommend Phil to be our first port of call for assistance because of the "Crime Surveillance CCTV" at the junction of Somerford Way and Downtown Road that Phil seems to be one of the few individuals that are aware of its existence and how to access potential CCTV Footage.  I have hereby requested Phil to lend his support.  I would be most grateful if you could contact Phil direct to offer further information as you see fit and to help follow up on this case.  Please also help "Spread The Words" to encourage our neighbours to help promptly report any incident, real or suspected, to the authorities.  It is important to get as many people as possible to join our "Collective Efforts" to improve our chance of success in combating crime in the Downtown neighbourhood.   I will not be circulating and publishing a "Photo Report" this time but please keep me informed of the progress.   Many thanks.

Thank you for your email of 22-8-2007 and prompt offer of support.  I will circulate your email and that of Jonathon Toy and David Meagher below to my contacts in the Downtown & RDW Neighbourhood and request them to help "Spread The Words" - for "Public Reassurance" as well as to encourage People of Rotherhithe to remain vigilant and help promptly report any incident, real or suspected, to the authorities in our collective efforts to help build a safer, more caring and more giving Rotherhithe Community where people will want to live, visit and work.  As Steve Cornish (Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland) has said in his recent emails to Cllr. Jeff Hook and Phil Murphy, a lot of good work has been done by Southwark Council, volunteers and various organisations for the Common Good.  It will be very sad to let these hard-earned achievements be destroyed by a few individuals and spoil it all for the "Decent Majority".  Last but certainly not least, it is extremely important to continue to build on the success of what has been achieved to date for Stave Hill Ecology Park and Russia Dock Woodland to help support the MAJOR "Heritage Lottery Funding Bid" as reported in the Stave Hill Ecology Park Newsletter (3-8-2007 Edition) - an extract is attached below for your easy reference.  A successful bid will be a MAJOR "Success Story" for Southwark Council (especially in your role as a Surrey Dock Ward Councillor and Southwark Council's Executive Member for Environment & Transport), People of Rotherhithe and every park user, current and future, of Stave Hill Ecology Park and Russia Dock Woodland. There is a lot at risk and I am very pleased and grateful to see your prompt and helpful response to my recent "Request for Help" email.

I would like to take this opportunity to send you my best wishes for your forthcoming Maternity Leave.

    Jonathon/Philip,

Could we please have another clampdown on all this undesirable activity going on in the woodlands - things seem to have escalated in recent weeks - there are considerable problems with dumping, fires, vandalism, explosions, BBQs, antisocial behaviour and mini-motos. Things had been relatively calm but there now seems to be something different every week. I know the SNT are aware, but can we please increase warden patrols and hold some blitzes please at particularly pertinent times so that we stamp out these problems. The wardens are virtually on site, so stepping up the level of activity should not be difficult.

Many thanks for actioning our request for a new lifebouy at globe pond to replace the one which was burnt out last wednesday.
As usual Jim Broadribs (small works team) were on the scene the very next day to survey the damage, and a new lifebouy was put in place last friday, with the damaged support frame also painted. Globe Pond is being environmentally worked on as we speak with many local people applauding recent events. i.e new chalk banks, new kingfisher nests, plus planting. This immediate action sends out a strong message.

    Many Thanks

    Thankyou phil,

I have checked this morning and all rubbish has been cleared. unfortunately one of the lifebouy containers at globe pond was set on fire last night causing damage to the tree and grass verge overlooking the pond. Globe pond is currently being worked on by t.r.u.e. and their volunteers, with new chalk banks being constructed which have kingfisher nests incorporated in them. We cannot allow bad news to outshine all the good news in the woodland. Can you arrange for jim broadrib to replace a new lifebouy a.s.a.p. please.

    regards....steve

    Hi steve,

Sorry about the state of RDW. I have informed Parks who will in turn get Quadron down as a matter of urgency to clean up the mess.

    Thanks

Further to my email of last night (Web Link :  http://rotherhithe0001.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!7BC0AE7DB0FCE5EE!486.entry ), I am writing again to report on the continual, and mostly nocturnal (from about 10pm to 00:30am) RAMs' activities in RDW.  Every cloud has a silver lining.  The rain tonight seemed to have dampened the RAMs from racing in RDW a bit until their unwelcome return from around 11pm which has continued for over an hour.  I have also heard the occassional female voice/screaming in addition to the equally loud noise made by the motorbikes.  I share the increasing concern of my neighbours and other park users that arsons, flytipping, RAMs and some other ASA's have risen sharply in the Downtown and RDW neighbourhood recently.  Some of these noticeable recent increase in crimes and ASAs could at least in part been caused by the "Dispersal Zone" in The Four Squares Estate in Bermondsey, Slippers Place Estate, Kirby Estate and Millpond Estae that came into effect since 16 July 2007 (Web Link :  http://rotherhithe0003.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4337256240820D27!143.entry).  I am blindcopying this email to all the RCSF Members in the Downtown neighbourhood to encourage them to be extra vigilant and help promptly report any crime and other anti-social behaviour, real or suspected, to the police.  I also hereby encourage them to help "Spread The Words" to promote "Public Understanding" as well as rally "Public Support" for our collective efforts to combat crime in our neighbourhood.  I have added below web links to the current laws regarding RAMs as well as specific reports and correspondence regarding RAMs in RDW.

    Hello mr Hook,

I have just returned from the woodland where a number of local residents have raised serious concerns about the amount of rubbish that is strewn all across the R.D.W. green.  This has once again been caused by people lighting indescriminate B.B.Qs over the weekend, then leaving their rubbish piled up against the seating areas before going home?...there are also many burnt out areas of grass where the B.B.Q.s were situated. not to mention the amount of tescos trollies that are scattered about the woodland that were used to get the food and drink to the green and just left there. These always end up in the ponds/waterways where the trust for urban ecology have to wade in to get them out.

I have lost count the amount of times that i have e.mailed you to get this activity stopped. As mentioned before these dangerous and illegal fires need to be stopped immediately. The wardens are only metres away from this area and the B.B.Qs go on all day, so there is absolutely no excuse for you not to solve this very basic problem. It is now tuesday and the rubbish is still all over the green. There is a lot of good work being done in the woodlands by the council, quadron, local volunteers, f.o.r.d.w & t.r.u.e. but this weekly problem keeps spoiling the good work carried out by those mentioned above.
