David :  Thank you again for the good work in RDW by the Rotherhithe Community Wardens.  Please note that I have posted the photo you sent me to the "RCSF Ecology & Wildlife Photos Collection to help "Spread the Word" which can be accessed via the web link :  http://www.flickr.com/photos/16999050@N00/2425947731/  I am especially pleased to see  that the rubbish collected has been promptly cleared away to help prevent arson risk, etc.

Neil & Team : The Capital Clean-Up Event in Russia Dock Woodland (RDW) on 15 April 2008 seemed to have been a great success much welcome by local residents as you can see from some email exchanges below.  May I please suggest for "RDW Clean Up" to be considered for future "Community PayBack Programme" activities to make it a regular event going forward ?

    G'day Steve,
It was our pleasure, even if it was picking up after other inconsiderate people?
The Rotherhithe wardens were assisted by the Bermondsey wardens, Rebeka from TRUE and Lorraine Smith from the community. Quadron took the rubbish away for us. We undertook this as part of the Capital Clean Up project.
Attached is a picture of some of the participants in front of just one of the rubbish piles that we created. The blue bags contain recyclable materials that we collected.
Interestingly we also removed a large stash of knives, tools and removed a rough sleepers cardboard.
We recovered one bird box found on the ground and I noted much woodpecker activity in this area too.
    regards
    David

Subject: Russia Dock Woodland ("RDW") : Safer Southwark Partnership (SSP)'s Strategy for Combating Reckless & Anti-Social Motorcycles ("RAMs") + Replacement of Vandalised Signage + "Kingfishers of Rotherhithe"

    Dear Tracy

Thank you very much for all your help and advice email below in response to the recent RAM incidents that have caused much local concern as reported in "Woodland Fears Over Burnt Bike" [ Southwark News (13-3-2008)] & "Trophy of Defiance" [South London Press (14-3-2008)] that can be accessed via the web link :  http://rotherhithe0003.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4337256240820D27!334.entry

The SSP's Action Plan seemed very comprehensive and let's hope it'll help bring the desired results.   I am most grateful to your help and that of Paul Highman in securing a replacement for the vandalised signage at Russia Walk to prevent "Broken Window Effect" in RDW.   Do you know if the Rotherhithe Community Wardens will include RAMs as part of the presentation during their scheduled visit of St. John's Primary School on the 30 April 08 from 10:00 - 11:15 as part of the School's Environmental Week event?

I am most grateful that Southwark News have continued their strong support to help promote public awareness and enjoyment of the diversified range of wildlife in Rotherhithe.  A copy of Jon Surtees' report on the "Kingfishers of Rotherhithe" that has been very well-received by many local residents can be accessed via the web link :  http://www.southwarknews.co.uk/00,news,9866,185,00.htm

I have lost count how many compliments I have received regarding Steve Cornish's "Rotherhithe Wildlife Photographs" on display together with photos by other contributors in the recently launched "RCSF's Ecology & Wildlife Photos Collection" which allows free viewing and downloading of individual photos by clicking each selected photo in turn.  It also allows free viewing of the slideshow by clicking "View as Slideshow" at the top right of the screen :  http://www.flickr.com/photos/16999050@N00/sets/72157604053249144/

I will circulate this email to "Spread The Words", promote "Community Involvement" and encourage "Public Support" for our collective efforts to help build a safer, more caring and more giving Rotherhithe community where people will want to live, visit and work.

    All best wishes

    Hi Kam,

Yes I did see the good news story...the pictures are fabulous.

On the other items that I needed to get back to you on:

Paul Highman has ordered a replacement sign for Russia Dock Woodlands, i'll let you know when it arrives and its due to be installed.

Speaking with the partnership around the Nuisance Bikes the following has been agreed.

    1) That trading standards, fire service, arson reduction officer and wardens will undertake test purchasing operations directed at under age sales of petrol by petrol stations.  This is to be a boroughwide operation but will initially focus on Rotherhithe.

    2) That the police, wardens and our abandoned vehicles department will work closely with regards to ensuring that when a nuisance bike is found or confiscated it is removed off site as quickly as possible.

    3) That Carmen Wright provides some educational material and information for young people around nuisance bikes to the Safer Neighbourhood Team who are currently working with local youth centres in the area.

    4) To undertake extra patrols where possible from the SNT and Community Wardens.

I hope that enforcement, education and communication over the next few months will be enough to ensure that the historical issue of nuisance bikes in Russia Dock Woodland is reduced again this year.

Kindest regards and have a great week.

    Dear Tracy

Did you see our latest "Good News Story"?  One of my local Kingfishers that you adored has appeared in Southwark News today.  It got the front page headline and a short but very complimentary story on Page 22.  The 2 photos by my neighbour, Steve Cornish [Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland and Chair of Downtown Defence Campaign (DDC)], can be accessed for viewing and download via the two web links below.

Subject: Russia Dock Woodland (RDW) : St. John's Primary School Environmental Week + Heritage Funding Bid Update + Message from Southwark Friends of The Earth + Kingfishers of RDW

Dear Stephanie & Jim (Southwark Friends of The Earth)

Thank you for your kind message below.  Steve Cornish would be very pleased to learn that you like his photos in the RCSF's Ecology & Wildlife Photos Collection that is freely available for public access and download in our collective efforts to help promote public interest, protection and enjoyment of Russia Dock Woodland.  I would like to update you on three important recent developments:

    1)    Stave Hill Ecology Park (SHEP) - Heritage Funding Bid Update

Following a meeting with the Heritage Funding Panel in March 2008, Stave Hill Ecology Park (SHEP) is preparing for the submission of a funding bid under the "Natural England Category" in June 2008.

    2)    Kingfishers of RDW - Southwark News on 10 April 2008 (Pages 1, 13 and 22)

Kingfisher is rare to find in Inner London and even more rare to be photographed.  The photograph of a "Kingfisher of RDW" has graced 3 pages of the latest issue of  Southwark News.  It got a mention as a front page headline and a short but very complimentary story on Page 22 that have quotes by Steve Cornish, Ben Dewhurst (T.R.U.E. Manager) and RSPB.  Two photos of the "Kingfisher of RDW" by Steve Cornish [Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland and Chair of Downtown Defence Campaign (DDC)], can be accessed for public viewing and download via the two web links below.

    -  Photo (Part 1 of 2) :    www.flickr.com/photos/16999050@N00/2394714186/

There is an email from Steve dated 2 April 2008 below the photo that explained the significance of the location where the "Kingfisher of RDW" was photographed in relation to the much contested proposed "Downtown Site".

    -  Photo (Part 2 of 2) :    www.flickr.com/photos/16999050@N00/2394714444/

This gives an enlarged version of a photo of the "Kingfisher of RDW".

    3)    St. John's Primary School - Environmental Week from 28 April 2008 (Monday) to 2 May 2008 (Friday)

St. John's Primary School has run this important educational programme for at least the last two years.  What has caused a lot of positive excitement in the "RDW Community" is the active involvement and contribution by Stave Hill Ecology Park (SHEP) and The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland (FRDW) this year.  Rebeka Clark, SHEP Site Manager and Southwark Woman of 2006 (Active in the Community Category)  and Steve Cornish have directly worked with Vera Jajechnyk (St. John's Catholic Primary School - Deputy Head) to decide how SHEP and FRDW can best assist St. John's Primary School to help promote EEC (Environment, Ecology & Conservation) via their forthcoming "Environmental Week" as well as other partnership work opportunities including:

    b)    Russia Dock Woodland Bird Boxes Project

The email from Steve Cornish dated Friday, April 11, 2008 9:09 PM below the photo explained the significance of the "miniature wind turbines" in the photo and the link with St John's School's Environmental Week.  You will also find web links to other photo-reports on "Stave Hill Volunteers" and Kids@StaveHill Arts Project, etc.

Please see a photo of Steve and Vera that was taken during their first strategy discussions and planning meeting on 28 March 2008 which can be accessed via the Web Link   http://www.flickr.com/photos/16999050@N00/2407342255/  where you'll find some related emails and other information below the photo including a copy of email from Rebeka Clark to Vera Jajechnyk dated Friday, April 11, 2008 @ 6:19 PM with a detailed proposal of events at SHEP for pupils of different age groups.  Topics to be covered include "Waste & Recycling", "Energy" and "Wildlife - Flora & Fauna".  It is much hoped that we can have the strong support by our local newspapers to help "Spread The Words" to promote public interest and support on "Green Issues".

Many thanks again for your continual strong interest and support.

    All best wishes

If the Council says yes to the next development, then the Government are also going against their own policies and the laws which govern the Biodiversity Action Plan!  There is a document from DEFRA about the Duty to Biodiversity which is available to us all and the Council is legally obliged to protect this.

Congratulations and a big THANK YOU to The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland in working with Southwark Council over the last festive season to help resolve the "Muddy Public Footpath" problem that used to be a constant source of complaints in RDW for years.  I have posted one of the photos that you sent me of the laying of the concrete slabs and two of my photos that show the "before" and "after" effects.  What a big, pleasant difference it has made to the users of RDW.  Our "Photo-Story" is now available for public access via the web link :  http://rotherhithe0003.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4337256240820D27!227.entryas a record of achievement by "Collective Efforts" to help encourage others to report community concerns to the authorities and for all interested parties to work "positively" together to help bring about changes for our Common Good.  Thank you again for all the good, hard work of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland.

Severe damage has reportedly been caused by Quadron's Ground Maintenance Workers who failed to use the smaller-sized motor van that have been promised when a lot of complaints have been made to Southwark Council when similar problems last occurred.  The attached photo was taken on 18-11-2006 in the public footpath that runs parallel to "Waterman Walk".  I have reported the problems to Jon Sheaff and Phil Murphy during the Rotherhithe Visual Audit at Greenland Dock last Friday, 17-11-2006. ......

    hi Kam,

The Help Call Point [(being erected in Russia Dock Woodland at the junction of Waterman's Walk and Lady Dock Path, close to the CCTV. camera and St. John's Bridge) (location note added by Kam Hong Leung for clarification) ] is a way of empowering the community by allowing them to speak directly to a qualified CCTV controler.  So if there are for sake of argument asb mopeds are going around RDW then the CCTV control room can be contacted so they can target their systems.  Also if someone is feeling threatened then the CCTV operator will be able to do a better job of keeping an eye out.

    Hope this is of help.

    G'day Kam,
Managed to catch the bike but not the youth who ran at the last second.
Yes as per the warden reorganisation that Chris McCracken (service manager) outlined at the Rotherhithe Community Council my job role and contact information have changed, as per the details below

    David

Thank you very much for the timely report email below.  Can you please advise if actions have been or will be taken against the three youths caught with the stolen motorbike?  Perhaps it might have explained why it has been relatively quiet in RDW so far today.

I will copy this email to all my contacts in the RDW and Downtown neighbourhood for their information and request them to help "Spread The Words" and continue to remain vigilant and promptly report any incident, real or suspected, to the authorities.

Last but certainly not least, I have noticed your contact details as shown in your email below of today seemed to have changed.  Can you please advise if your role and responsibilities have changed recently so that I can update other RCSF Members as appropriate?

    Many thanks again.

    Dear Neil

Thank you for your email below of 18-9-2006 @ 1:06pm.  I am pleased to learn that the police has successfully dealt with some RAMs in recent months.  I would welcome your comments on the recent return of rowdy big youth gatherings in RDW also, especially in weekend evenings which were often associated with the occurrence of RAMs.  I look forward to hearing further from you at the Ward Panel Meeting on 27-9-2007 so that I can help pass on the information to the concerned local residents.

I am also pleased to learn that you are hopeful in recruiting two youths for the Ward Panel.  I believe the recruitment of Barry Mason (Southwark Cyclists - Co-ordinator) is a big win for the Ward Panel given his valuable connections at different levels and skill sets.  As for the case of Lorraine Smith (DDC Vice Chair + Secretary of The Friends of Russia Dock Wodland), I only suggested her to contact Kath Whittam direct should she be interested.  I share your concern that it may be counterproductive to have too many members on a Ward Panel if future Ward Panel meetings are to be conducted in the same format like it has been to date.  However, I would be very pleasantly surprised if we will ever get too many able and willing volunteers who will be prepared to offer the time, commitment and community service on a consistent basis.  It is my understanding that some Wards in Southwark conduct their Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel meetings as public meetings and everyone is welcome.  Is there any guideline on this from Southwark Police?  Ward Panel Membership is an agenda item for our next Ward Panel Meeting and I concur with you that some open discussions, clarification and agreed protocol would be helpful.

    All best wishes

    Dear Kam,

We are fully aware of the motorbike problems which seem to be everywhere!

Just a quick update- we have confiscated and destroyed about 6 bikes in the last few months using powers under the Road Traffic Act ! We will discuss this at the Ward Panel Meeting.

Just as a 'by the way'.. Perhaps it may be a good idea to go through Kath before inviting new members to the ward panel meeting. The reason I say this is that Barry Mason will be a new member and I've managed to recruit (hopefully) two youths. My worry is that if we have too many at the meeting it may become difficult to control.

Kath-Perhaps we need to agree on a protocol ?

    Dear Lorraine

Thank you very much for your Local Intelligence Report email below, your continual vigilance and contribution to our collective Community Safety efforts.  Unfortunately, the rowdy youths and RAMs are back in RDW again tonight.  I concur with you that the reported problems seem to be recurring and increasing in frequency in recent weeks.  As Yvonne Drake has stated in her recent report, Mellish Field has been an Arson Hotspot in recent months and the resurgence of RAMs is a cause for concerns.  Kath Whittam has agreed to add 'Community Safety problems in RDW and the Downtown Neighbourhood' as an agenda item for discussion at the Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel Meeting on 27-9-2007 (Thursday).  I am copying this email to Kath, Surrey Docks Ward Councillors, Phil Murphy, the police and the wardens for their information and potential follow-ups.  Please help 'Spread The Words', at the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland Annual General Meeting on 26-9-2007, etc., on the reported problems to encourage more People of Rotherhithe to be vigilant and help promptly report any Community Safety incident, real or suspected, to the authorities.

I wonder if you would be interested in joining the Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel?  I know Kath is keen to widen the membership and geographical representation of the Ward Panel.  If you do, please contact Kath direct via email.  Many thanks again.

    Dear Kam

I reported to the wardens that a motorbike were being ridden on Mellish Field on Saturday evening.  The wardens said they would contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team.  This has been steadily happening on the past few Saturday nights, I also saw three youths riding what looked like a stolen pizza bike on Friday around lunchtime.

    Dear Friends

It will soon be the 4th Anniversary of the near-fatal youth gang attack on 23-year of Mr. Manual Dessolis in RDW at the junction of Lady Dock Path and Waterman's Walk on a bright sunny evening on 21-9-2007 (Sunday) that shook the Rotherhithe Community (Web Link for information http://rotherhithe.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!FC4C191A8F51F272!118.entry ).

Please note the rowdy youth gathering of teenage males and females as well as RAMs in RDW last night, 15-9-2007 (Saturday) from about 8pm to midnight.  The RAMs seemed to be big motorcycles and were being driven at high speed and made very loud noise.  The youths have gathered in a large number, at and around the sitting bench right behind 46 and 50 Somerford Way in Waterman's Walk, the biggest public footpath in RDW.  The same also happened on Friday, 14-9-2007, at about 10pm but in a much smaller scale and lasted a much shorter time than that of yesterday.  I would be most grateful if you could take this Local Intelligence Report into account in planning for Community Safety patrols in RDW and the Downtown Neighbourhood, especially in view of the various Community Safety problems (arson, explosions, RAMs, vandalism, flytipping, ...) in the area in recent months.

Phil & Yvonne  The next Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel Meeting has been scheduled on 27-9-2007 (Thursday).  I would be most grateful if you can give me an update of your recent investigations, especially regarding the arson and explosions of a dumped car in Downtown Road on 11-8-2007 (Saturday) (Web Link for information :  http://rotherhithe0001.spaces.live.com:80/blog/cns!7BC0AE7DB0FCE5EE!486.entry) - including the availability of Southwark Council's CCTV footage and identification of suspects

Kath :  I would be most gratefil if you could add 'Community Safety problems in RDW and the Downtown Neighbourhood' as an agenda item for discussion at the Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Ward Panel Meeting on 27-9-2007 (Thursday).

    Importance: High

    Dear Sir / Madam

Please note the Faulty Street Light Number 51009 at Waterman's Walk in Russia Dock Woodland near its junction with Lady Dock Path.  It is a Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour Hot Spot where 23-year old Mr. Manuel Dessolis suffered a near-fatal attack by a gang of some 10+ youths on 21-9-2003.  There has been a recent resurgence of crime and anti-social behaviour in the neighbourhood (arson, dumping of cannabis factory, vandalism, rcckless & anti-social motorcycles, ...) in recent months.  Please arrange for the street light to be repaired as a matter of urgency and let me know when it will be repaired and work again.  Many thanks.

    Yours faithfully

    Kam,

thank you for your vigilance and support. The first incidence we took to be a 'one off' it is more worrying that there ia a recurrance. Although the roots and soil pose no threat to the children, it is not pleasant that children so young should have to come in contact with the detritus of drug use.

    Dear Friends
