Monthly Crime Statistics Overview for the “4 Policing Areas” in October 2007

“Rotherhithe Ward” and  “Surrey Docks Ward” have both suffered single-digit year-on-year overall % increase of monthly crime rates in October 2007, of similar magnitude, while that for both “Southwark” and “Greater London” have enjoyed single-digit year-on-year overall % decrease, with that for “Greater London” more than twice that of “Southwark”.

    4

During the 12 months to 31-10-2007, there was over “1-in-10” chance for a resident in becoming a “Victim of Crime” in all “4 Policing Areas” with “Southwark” being the most unsafe area.  “Surrey Docks Ward” has remained the safest of the four “Policing Areas” by a significant margin.  Both “Rotherhithe Ward” and “Surrey Docks Ward” have enjoyed year-on-year decrease in “Total Crime Rate” and have achieved relative out-performance when compared to “Southwark” but an under-performance relative to “Greater London”.

    5

    6

Theft & Handling”, “Violence Against The Person”; “Criminal Damage and “Burglary” were the four most common “Types of Crime” for all four “Policing Areas” for the “12 Months Ended 31-10-2007” like that in the last report for “12 Months Ended 30-4-2007”.

“Surrey Docks Ward” has enjoyed relative out-performance compared to “Rotherhithe Ward” for the 12 Months Ended 31-10-2007.

    7

“Rotherhithe Ward”, “Surrey Docks Ward” and “Southwark” have all under-performed when compared to “Greater London” which had only one crime type, “Drugs Offences”, that had a “Year-on-Year Increase” for the “12 Months Ended 31-10-2007”.

Drugs Offences” had significant double-digit year-on-year % increase in October 2007 for “Surrey Docks Ward”, “Southwark” and “Greater London” but “Rotherhithe Ward” has enjoyed a 24.7% year-on-year % decrease, a significant out-performance.

“Rotherhithe Ward” : “Acquisitive Crimes“ had the fastest % increase of annual crime rates  with a 21.6% and 17.3% year-on-year increase for “Burglary” and “Robbery” respectively.  These “Acquisitive Crimes“ figures looked particularly bad when compared with “Surrey Docks Ward”, “Southwark” and “Greater London” which have all enjoyed significant relative out-performance for the same period.

     8

“Rotherhithe Ward” :  The 24.7% annual fall in “Drugs Offences” for the “12 Months Ended 31-10-2007” was a significant out-performance when compared to that for “Surrey Docks Ward”, “Southwark” and “Greater London” which  have all suffered significant double-digit annual % rises.

“Surrey Docks Ward” :  Two of the most commonly reported crime types, “Criminal Damage” and “Violence Against The Person” have both enjoyed annual fall for the “12 Months Ended 31-10-2007”.

    Concluding Remarks

The significant turnaround reported for the “12 Months Ended 30-4-2007” in both “Rotherhithe Ward” and “Surrey Docks Ward” of the worrying trend of rapid increase in “Acquisitive Crimes“ (“Robbery” and “Burglary”) seemed to have stood the test of time only for “Surrey Docks Ward” but not for “Rotherhithe Ward”.

“Rotherhithe Ward” :  It seems worth keeping a close watch on the future crime trend regarding “Acquisitive Crimes“ (“Robbery” and “Burglary”) as well as “Violence Against The Person” for policing resource allocation purpose.

“Surrey Docks Ward” : It has enjoyed a relatively good “12 Months Ended 31-10-2007”.  However, it seems worth keeping a watch on the future crime trend regarding “Drugs Offences” for policing resource allocation purpose, and may be for “Criminal Damage” and “Violence Against The Person” also in view of the monthly crime statistic for October 2007.
