Subject: Planning Survey results and new Post Offices survey

Sent on behalf of Valerie Shawcross AM

    Dear ePanel Members

    Planning survey results
Thank you so much to the 255 people who completed my "Protecting London's Streets and Gardens" survey. The results of the survey are now available on my website http://www.valshawcross.com/index.php?id=352.

The vast majority of you agreed with me that councils need more planning powers to protect the character of our area. I am using the results of the survey to keep up the pressure on Ken Livingstone to bring these proposals forward as soon as possible. I will be posting the further updates on this issue in the Campaigns section of my website http://www.valshawcross.com/index.php?id=351

    Post Offices Survey
As many of you will have heard, on Tuesday Post Office Ltd announced that they wish to close 171 post office branches in London - 14 of which are in Lambeth & Southwark.

I am extremely angry at the proposals. Post Offices play a vital link in the social and economic life of local communities. I am very worried that at a time when we are seeking to regenerate poorer areas of London that local shopping parades will be hit by the loss of an important local service which attracts shoppers to use their local shops and facilities. I am particularly concerned that the criteria for access to Post Offices has been downgraded in London - previously deprived communities in London had to be within a half mile of a post office. Now this has been reduced to 1 mile. I will be making strong representations to Post Office Ltd and I would encourage any one worried about the impact of losing these post offices to do the same.

I am seeking to gather evidence and views about Post Offices to help strengthen my response to the consultation and I have launched a new survey which I would be very grateful if you could take the time to complete http://FreeOnlineSurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?sid=ztoyudu9qi9pdvl397535

Please feel free to circulate this email to any of your friends and contacts who you think would be interested.

Have you considered becoming a Treasurer?

Time & Talents is a long established, multi purpose charitable organisation based in Rotherhithe.  To ensure the continuing success of the charity, the Board is seeking to appoint a Treasurer.  Board meetings are monthly, in the evening. Occasional ad hoc discussion with the finance staff may also be required.

Time & Talents is part of the settlement movement. It has a very good track record of well organised, wide ranging work that is deeply embedded in the local community. Its services are user led and aim to provide a sense of belonging.

If you feel you have a contribution to make and are interested in learning more about Time & Talents and the role of Treasurer,

    Message: Jan 09 2008, 02:58 PM
    From: "Bekke Clark"
    Subject: Stave Hill supporters

    Hello to you all,

As promised, here's the email asking for letters of support. You will all know about the Heritage Lottery Fund bid, which will be submitted in March. However, you may not know that I am also applying for a Green Pennant Award. The deadline is on the 27th Jan, a fact I found out just before flying to NZ! Info on the Green Flag/Pennant Award can be found at :

    www.greenflagaward.co.uk

So, if you feel you could write a letter of support, it would be very helpful. Letters need to be individual, (so no copying!) and signed.

I have attached a page, which suggests points you could cover, but really, what the letter should be about is you, the park, and the community. What do you think is good about it?

Any letters should be posted to me at :
Rebeka Clark. Site Manager, StaveHill Ecology Park, Timber Pond Rd., London  SE16 6AX

You may have noticed the different email address. Until the phone line is restored at Stave Hill, this is my work address.
As always, thank you for your help and support. Enjoy your January off, and I look forward to seeing you in February.
    Regards,
    Rebeka

Points to consider when writing a letter of support for SHEP

Do you feel that Stave Hill is a valued part of the local community map?

Do you like the park because:

The access to wildlife / wildspace?

    The peace and tranquillity?

The links to traditional countryside techniques, for example hedgelaying?

Do you feel that the site is well maintained and clean?

Do you feel safe when in the park?

Do you think that the site invites involvement by the local community?

What is your link to the site?

These are all points to consider, but really, it’s all about what YOU like about Stave Hill. If you really like the fact that we have enormous compost bins which are used by Bacon’s College, then say so! If you like the wildflowers and dragonflies then mention that. Or if it’s the cameradie of the volunteer days and all getting muddy in a pond, then write that down.

    Hi Kam,

Thank you for your e-mail.  I very much look forward to working in Rotherhithe and attending the RCSF forum.  I just need to let you know however that I am not a community safety officer but an Area Management and Community Engagement officer.  My role is to gain an understanding of what developments and future investments will be taking place in an area especially around public realm and help to fill gaps where improvements need to be made.  Another part of my role is the delivery of the framework of the yearly cleaner, greener, safer programme, visual audits and also be a key contact for members with regards to issues they have around the public realm and Environment and Housing (which does include community safety enquiries).

If you have any questions please do get in touch.

I look forward to meeting with you all in the future.

A junior HMRC official who appears to have been asleep on the job burnt the child benefit database onto two computer discs and posted them.  The two discs have reportedly gone missing which triggered a major security threat.  He had committed a potentially catastrophic security breach.  HMRC’s procedures state that such detailed data — the names, addresses, National Insurance numbers and bank details of every child benefit claimant in the country — should never leave the offices in Washington, Tyne & Wear. If the auditors wanted to see that material, they were to be invited to the North East to view it on a standalone computer in a secure room.

Thank you for your e-mail and I hope that the following update may be useful :

    • Cycling prohibition signage was installed along the temporary diversion route by the contractor for the Tesco store extension but without my knowledge.  Once alerted to this, the signage was promptly removed.
    • A CCTV camera has just been installed at the entrance to the underpass and directional signage will be erected next week now due to a slight delay with the supplier.
    • Philip Murphy has contacted me and informed that Tracey Dickinson has taken over his workload. Tracey subsequently called me and along with Ian Gentry, CCTV Manager, has arranged to meet with me on the 3rd December.
    • Andy Bonnici, Deputy Centre Manager for Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, left yesterday after nearly 20 years service and I would like to thank you for your kind comments about him.  Andy has family connections in the Rotherhithe area and so will be returning on a regular basis. Should anyone wish to contact him in the future I have his new contact details which he is happy for me to pass on.

As stated in my last e-mail I am happy to take a phone-call regarding any issues/ concerns which in some instances may help resolve matters more speedily and negate the need for a long chain of e-mails.  If there is any other information you would like to know I will do my best to supply this.

    Best regards.

    Ian

    Dear Paul

I am pleased to advise that Tesco’s contractor, Cartronics, has now been to site and next week will install a new magnetic strip, which will be activated during the period of the Tesco store extension works, as a temporary measure to prevent trolleys being taken off site at the Tesco end of the scheme.

Once the extension works are complete then a new permanent reconfiguration of the trolley retention system will take place in this area.

I trust then that the number of trolleys being taken from site will the reduce in number shortly; if you have any further concerns regarding “escaped trolleys,” however,  please let me know and I will liaise with Tesco store management to try to resolve.

    Regards,

    Ian

    Dear Paul

    Many thanks for your e-mail.

The road re-alignment, as part of the Tesco store extension, will I believe have affected the operation of the trolley retention system at this end of the scheme and so may account for an increase in “escaped trolleys” although I was not aware until now that numbers had increased recently.

If you can bear with me for a short while I will discuss this matter directly with the Tesco store manager so that I have a full understanding and then revert to you. I know that Tesco employ a contractor called Cartronics to maintain their red-line trolley retention system and I will endeavour to glean some information from these also.

The road re-alignment is due to complete next Monday (19th) and it may be that Cartronics need to wait for this completion before installing a new red-line.

As you probably know Tesco also employ a company to round-up trolleys that have been abandoned off-site and I will explore with the Tesco store manager whether there is anything more this company might be able to do in the very short term to ease the problem.

    Regards,

    Ian

    Dear Ian,

Thanks for your help during the ongoing extension work.  I have a particular concern about the increasing numbers of trolleys to be found escaping from the centre.  Is this related to the change of footway under the bridge and the absence of the locking magnetic strip?

    Best wishes,

    Paul
