Subject: RE: Community Safety Risk Alert : Greenland Dock to Tesco Link under Redriff Road - Rotherhithe Residents' Serious Concerns regarding Tesco Superstore's Expansion Project

    Kam

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the temporary access route to/from Greenland Dock, via the underpass, and further to our brief meeting this morning I hope that the following may provide some clarity and allay concerns.

The temporary access route has been formed to allow works to proceed in extending the Tesco store sideways on the elevation facing out to Redriff Road.  Once the new structure is complete, scheduled for the middle of next year, then the new permanent access route will be opened; this new permanent route takes a more direct line to the underpass than the temporary one, in front of the new sub-station rather than behind it, and there has been a good deal of consultation regarding the design of this; initial designs were amended and re-presented in light of comments received.

With regard to the temporary access route, whilst there is not a clear line of sight to the underpass, a 2 metre tarmac pathway has been constructed which is very brightly illuminated  with bulkhead lighting the full length of the hoarding. A curved mirror has been installed at the entrance to the underpass to improve visibility and early next week a CCTV camera is being installed positioned to look both into the underpass and along the access route; this camera will be set to record 24 hours a day and be linked into the shopping centre’s own recording system and security control room. (The underpass itself is not within the centre’s ownership as you are aware and I recall there was a proposal from the Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum for Southwark Council to install CCTV in this area but assume that this is not likely to happen in the very near future).  Directional signage will also be installed shortly and the access route will be cleaned daily.

Finally I have put a call into Philip Murphy to discuss with him whether there are any other additional measures that might be considered which would promote safe use of the temporary access route.

I am happy to discuss any of the above in more detail should anyone should wish to do so and have detailed my contact telephone number below.

    Best regards,

    Ian

    hi Kam,

The Help Call Point is a way of empowering the community by allowing them to speak directly to a qualified CCTV controler.  So if there are for sake of argument asb mopeds are going around RDW then the CCTV control room can be contacted so they can target their systems.  Also if someone is feeling threatened then the CCTV operator will be able to do a better job of keeping an eye out.

    Hope this is of help.

    thanks

Southwark Council's Planning Committee voted unanimously on 6-11-2007 (Tuesday) to reject Barratt's revised planning application on the grounds of the proximity of the development to Russia Dock Woodland and the lack of play areas for the new residents.

    Subject: Stave Hill Saturdays

Hello the Stave Hill Saturday crew....

Some diary dates for you, and news from the park.

    Diary dates...
Saturday 10th November: hedgelaying and woodland management. We will be creating a new hedge at one of the site entrances. This will not only benefit wildlife, but will also improve access and be visually stunning! We will also be clearing the adjacent woodland to improve growing conditions for the bluebells and primroses. We will be having extra help from GoLondon  volunteers, so we should be able to get loads done! Kids@StaveHill will be creating ghastly goblins for site decor. This task will run until 3pm, as there will be a formal meeting of Friends Of Stave Hill. The meeting will start at 3pm and finish at 4pm. An agenda is attached for those wishing to attend. Also attached is a directions map for new volunteers.

Saturday 8th December:  a SHED day. We will be working on the visitor centre...chinking here, painting there. Time to make the building draughtproof, and move on to the final stages. Kids@StaveHill will be creating some stained glass (painted perspex!) windows. The task will finish at 3pm, so that we can toast our successful Stave Hill year with mulled wine and mince pies.

    The news....
Work on SHED proceeds apace...prepare to be very impressed by the re configured loo! Now totally accessible. The lads on Community Punishment are doing a grand job chinking the front of the building. The outhouse is scheduled to have it's green roof installed on the 14th October.

A group of mums and kids is going to take over the allotment. Stave Hill Allotment Kids, SHAK, have been on site, measuring up and planning planting. This is great news, as the allotment will be able to realise it's full potential. Put your veg orders in now!

With the approach of autumn, tasks on site have been focused on preparing the site for winter sleep. Lots of woodland clearance, final cuts of meadows, and planting of wildflowers to bloom next year. This is the time of year when we crawl into the usually inaccessible areas and clear them out. We will be doing a fungi survey, and mucking around with the compost bins.

Our little hedgehog mob are still about, although we've had a few problems with cat burglers in the feeding stations! Over the next month we will be building hibernation boxes, to be strategically placed on site. Thanks to Lorraine, a local resident, all our foxes are bright eyed and bushy tailed.

The new management plan will shortly be ready for publication....all ready for the HLF funding bid, applying for a Green Pennant award, and applying for Local Nature Reserve status. Watch this space!

If you would like to be removed from this mailing list, please let me know.

    See you all soon...
    Rebeka

    Hello the Stave Hill gang....

    Diary dates....

Saturday 15th September, for pond management. Some healthy fun with duckweed, opening up the pond surface area, so that the kingfisher can see to catch his fish! Also Kids@StaveHill,
for butterflies and banners. Lots of fun with paint and pillowcases.

Saturday  6th October, for coppicing hazel, a regular autumn/ winter task. This will supply us with timber for woven fencing, and allow for a sturdy dense regrowth.....great for birds. Kids@StaveHill
will be creating more art marvels for the  park.

    Saturday  10th November
for hedgelaying. Creating this wonderful and attractive habitat will benefit both the wildlife and human visitors. This task will run til 2pm, and will be followed by a formal meeting of the Friends of Stave Hill. The meeting will finish at 4pm.

    News.....
I'm not able to call myself a Luddite any more...having signed up to Facebook, and joined the Stave Hill page! I do think that as a networking tool, this page will be very valuable to us, so thank you Sally for administrating / organising this. We're hoping that  many more sign up.

The initial batwalk was postponed due to monsoon conditions, but we were able to get out the following week. The bats were out in force, mainly Pipistrelles, and the occasional Daubentons. A very enjoyable evening, and if we have a mild autumn, we could have another walk in start of October.

Hedgehogs...our little gang are still turning up for their dinner every night. This is quite reassuring, as we hope to persuade them to overwinter near SHED, where we can monitor them. With hedgehogs now officially at risk, it's good to know that they are surviving in Rotherhithe. We've found evidence of them in several parts of the park, and have created mobile feeding stations, so we can try to find their favourite spot.

Moths.....following the amazingly successful visit of the Surrey micro moth group, we have been approached by Butterfly Conservation. They would like to help us host moth watch nights in 2008. This would be great fun, and I think we'd have no difficulty in finding people to attend.

SHED and HLF funding....thanks to Paul and his amazing team, we have a roof on the outhouse. A huge step forward in getting the building structurally complete. Work on remodelling the toilet proceeds apace....you may find SHED looking completely different! Everything is coming together, slowly but solidly.

    See you all soon,

The FREE GATES Advice Line (Freephone :  0800 458 9109) comes after six teenagers were shot dead or fatally stabbed in South London this year to help kids leave gangs.  The phone line is private and confidential and can help gang members, families affected by gangs and concerned residents.

Kids can sign up to the GATES Text Alert Service by texting 'GATES' and the age to 82055.  This supporting text service is also being run by Southwark Victim Support and charity Kickstart to let people know what is going on.  Details of sporting events and other entertainment will also be sent to kids' mobiles in an attempt to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.

Southwark Acting Superintendent Mark Antill said the project would support the Met Police's Operation Curb that aims to prevent youths from joining gangs.

Subject: oh my! Stave Hill & the 21st century

    Hello there...

    two new diary dates:

Bat walk on Wednesday 22nd August, in Russia Dock Woodland. Meeting at the junction of Lady Dock Path and Waterman's Walk. Let's hope there is no monsoon this time!

The next Stave Hill Saturday will be on
15th September, along with Kids@StaveHill. At this time of year, it's lots of marvelous meadow management, and last blasts on surveying beasties.

So, Stave Hill charges into 21st century...what is all this about?  Well, we have now got our own facebook page, kindly set up by Sally. Are you going to be first in the queue to join? Even a confirmed Luddite like myself will be answering the invite!!  Sally will be the administrator, and will send out invites to join.
If you DO NOT want me to pass your email Address on to Sally, please let me know by Monday 20th August.

Other news on the park front...The micro moth survey found an astonishing one hundred species! These included a moth which is a new county record, and at least six notables. (which have only been found on ten sites since 1986) So obviously we doing all the right management things.

Look forward to seeing you all soon,
    Rebeka

    Hello Rosalie.

On walking the entire length of Russia Dock Woodland this morning, there now seems to be several trees that have either fallen completely to the ground or some that have fallen but are being held up by the trees that are directly next to them, this i am sure will put added stress on the adjoining tree and will have a knock on effect. one tree has fallen at a 45 degree angle close to Redriff Bridge, and is only being supported by one of the branches which is wedged into the woodlands lighting support column. could we look at this a.s.a.p. please.

    many thanks...steve f.o.r.d.w.

A hardcore of offenders is blamed for much of the disorder on Britain's streets, in the study by Parliament's Public Accounts Committee.  The Government is accused of failing to provide an effective response to anti-social behaviour, which costs the country £3.4billion every year.   Committee chairman Edward Leigh said: 'After dark, our city and town centres are fast becoming No-Go Areas.   'No civilised country should have to put up with what can seem like an occupying army loose in the streets.'   The committee calls for more people breaching their ASBOs to be prosecuted in crown courts and given jail sentences.  Home Office minister Tony McNulty said 53 new 'Family Intervention Projects', where ASBOs are twinned with supervision, were being targeted at the worst families.  He defended the Government's 'twin-track approach of support and enforcement'.

    Dear all

I would like to inform you of an event that will be taking place next August 11 at Southwark park (opposite the back of the children's play area next to the cafe by Gomm gate) from 11 am until 3 pm.

The main aim of the event is to raise awareness amongst dog owners of the dog fouling problem. In order to do so we will be  “flagging the poo”. The aim is to mark all the examples of dog mess found using brightly coloured flags. The idea is to dramatise and illustrate the extent of the problem to dog owners, and perhaps to shame the irresponsible ones into improving their behaviour.

The RSPCA will be offering free microchipping, which normally costs £30-£40 at the vets, so it's a great incentive for dog (and cat) owners to pop along. We will also be given free poop scoop bags and information on the risks of dog fouling.

So if you could please spread the word, especially amongst people who own dogs or cats and would like to have them microchipped, it would be great. I have attached a poster that you might want to print and put up in your notice boards. Gary or Kam just wondering if you have any contacts within TNRA's that you could forward this onto.

If you have any questions you can call me on 02075254259.

    Thanks

    Subject: Stave Hill Saturdays

    Hello All....

The latest news from Stave Hill...

    Next volunteer day (11:00am to 3:30pm) and Kids@StaveHill (K@SH) (11:30am to 3:00pm) : Saturday 11th August 2007

Bat Walk, and a chance to see creatures of the night : Wednesday 15th August 2007, meeting at 9pm, Lady Dock Path entry to Russia Dock Woodland.

Quite an eventful month as we had our open day on the 15th July. This was fairly successful, and we certainly seemed to have plenty of kids creating all manner of marvellous monsters. Even a massive downpour didn't curb their enthusiasm! This all seems to promise well for our next major event in September, when we will be part of the Rotherhithe Open Houses Weekend. More info on that available on request. Thanks are due to Sally, Bea, Tony and Alison for helping out at the Open Day, very much appreciated.

The next major item of news is funding. We've been given to go ahead to apply for Heritage Lottery Funding, and we will be applying for quite a substantial amount. Our three major spends will be the visitor centre (SHED), the site, and volunteer facilities. We will be submitting the application in March 2008, which effectively means that from now on, everything we do is connected to our bid. I hope that some or all of you would like to be involved....at the most minimal level this would mean coming along to events and having a good time in the Park. At present our Friends of  Stave Hill Group is quite informal, and this will have to become somewhat more official. By this I mean holding/attending four meetings a year, which would take place on the same day as the volunteer Saturdays. These formal meetings would discuss the management / direction/events at Stave Hill.  Please let me know if you feel you could commit to two hours/ four meetings a year. Having our Friends of Stave Hill Group on a more formal footing is essential to our bid, and the more friends we have the better!

The last volunteer day and Kids@StaveHill went well, with several flat-pack bird box kits and a host of site decorations created for the Open Day. Well done to all concerned. I've sent off details regarding Kids@StaveHill to the Docklands Settlement, and will be advertising it in other areas. If you all would like to spread the word regarding the volunteer days, or bring along your friends, family and next door neighbour, the next event is on Saturday the 11th of August. We'll be doing ladybird surveys, and scything the meadows. K@SH will be getting creative with junk.

On the wildlife front, you may have seen the Rotherhithe hedgehogs in the Southwark News recently. The younger ones don't seem to be quite as anti-paparazzi! There have also been a couple of rare-ish moths found in the meadows. The main pond has been surveyed, and is full of pondlife, so it seems that the re-building of it was a complete success. The park is in fairly good order, with a fine display of flowers and butterflies....just the spot for a tranquil picnic.

    See you all soon,
    Rebeka.

If you would like to be removed from this mailing list, please email me, and I will delete your address. Addresses on this list are used only to contact recipients regarding volunteer news and events at Stave Hill Ecology Park.

Subject: Invite to our Cricket Match.

    hello kam,

Could you please put this on your website. we are looking at getting local kids involved more with cricket in the rotherhithe area, what with the new sports complex at mellish fields taking place probably in september?, there is a golden opportunity to join forces with the people at burgess park where Colin Hunte is the manager. Colin invited me down to their new cricket complex a couple of months ago, and it is very impressive, and well run. Colin is keen to get youngsters from all over southwark along to their training facilities at burgess park (neate street) to get them to try cricket for probably the first time, all equipment is supplied and top quality coaching is available with current and ex cricket internationals coming along to give their time to this great sport.

I can see a great future in this....

    regards ...steve
