    Hello Kam,

First, a very heartfelt thank you for all your support. It was a lovely note to return to work on! What a great letter in the Southwark News, and I know that it is thanks to you that we have received letters from Jenny Jones and Val Shawcross. Both Steve and Reuben have kept me up to date, and passed on your paperwork, which will be a valuable addition to the bid portfolio. I have been told that there is a letter from Bea in this week's News, and I intend to send John to the shop to get me a copy ........

    With best wishes,
    Rebeka

    Hello to you all,

As promised, here's the email asking for letters of support. You will all know about the Heritage Lottery Fund bid, which will be submitted in March. However, you may not know that I am also applying for a Green Pennant Award. The deadline is on the 27th Jan, a fact I found out just before flying to NZ! Info on the Green Flag/Pennant Award can be found at :

    www.greenflagaward.co.uk

So, if you feel you could write a letter of support, it would be very helpful. Letters need to be individual, (so no copying!) and signed.

I have attached a page, which suggests points you could cover, but really, what the letter should be about is you, the park, and the community. What do you think is good about it?

Any letters should be posted to me at :

    Rebeka Clark.
    Site Manager,
    StaveHill Ecology Park
    Timber Pond Rd
    London
    SE16 6AX

You may have noticed the different email address. Until the phone line is restored at Stave Hill, this is my work address.
As always, thank you for your help and support. Enjoy your January off, and I look forward to seeing you in February.
    Regards,
    Rebeka

Points to consider when writing a Letter of Support

Do you feel that Stave Hill is a valued part of the local community map?

Do you like the park because:

The access to wildlife / wildspace?

    The peace and tranquillity?

The links to traditional countryside techniques, for example hedgelaying?

Do you feel that the site is well maintained and clean?

Do you feel safe when in the park?

Do you think that the site invites involvement by the local community?

What is your link to the site?

These are all points to consider, but really, it’s all about what YOU like about Stave Hill. If you really like the fact that we have enormous compost bins which are used by Bacon’s College, then say so! If you like the wildflowers and dragonflies then mention that. Or if it’s the cameradie of the volunteer days and all getting muddy in a pond, then write that down.

    Dear Sir / Madam

Letter of Support for Stave Hill Ecology Park (SHEP) Application for Heritage Lottery Fund

SHEP’s Founder and Site Manager, Rebeka Clark was voted Southwark Woman of 2006 (Active in the Community Category).  It is truly heartening to see a strong and growing interest in community-building, conversation, ecology, environment and wildlife in the Rotherhithe Community Council Area which SHEP, an integral part of' Russia Dock Woodland in South East London has played an increasingly active and important role.  I am writing on behalf of Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum (RCSF) to lend our whole-hearted support to SHEP’s application for Heritage Lottery Fund to further its business objectives and community-building efforts.

SHEP has grown from strength to strength with the support of the local community and other organisations, including volunteers from the neighbourhood and further afield;  global businesses like Barclays Bank and Ernst & Young that send their community service volunteers;  Community Service Volunteers (CSV), the UK's largest volunteering and training organisation via their 'Go London Events Programme' and the convicted offenders that serve 'Community Service Orders' via the 'Community Payback Programme' which the Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Police Team helps organise in our collective efforts to help build a safer, more caring and more giving Rotherhithe Community where people will want to live, visit and work.  SHEP had an active and successful year in 2007 and developed new and varied activities like the 'Kids@StaveHill' programme that was launched in April 2007 to actively engage young people in eco-friendly activities and creative arts with their special 'Works of Art' on public display in SHEP for all to see and enjoy.

    RCSF_Letter_2a

Woodland birds that once flourished across Britain are vanishing according to an extensive study of bird populations across twenty European countries with some woodland bird numbers fallen by up to 20% in the past two decades and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has blamed it on the disappearance of woodlands as reported by BBC Radio 4 on 21 December 2007.  SHEP actively helps promote ecology, wild flower meadow, grassland and woodland habitats for people, family pets and wildlife to enjoy.  SHEP is the UK's first ever designated urban butterfly sanctuary and has a 12m high wind turbine to feed the man-made ponds and canals with natural water.  SHEP takes part in the 'Rotherhithe Peninsular-wide Wildlife Project' that BTCV (formerly known as the 'British Trust for Conservation Volunteers') runs in association with Southwark Council that was launched on 2 June 2007.  SHEP also takes part in the.   'Russia Dock Woodland Bird Boxes Project' that has been run for over three years in association with Bacon's College,  Friends of Russia Dock Woodland and local RSPB members.  Rotherhithe has enjoyed a fast-growing reputation for love of wildlife as evidenced by Southwark News’ full-page special report 'Rotherhithe Wild At Heart' that was published on 26 July 2007 which has helped promote further public interest and support for wildlife in Rotherhithe.

The success and important work of the 'Stave Hill Volunteers' have been well-recognised and well-respected by many people and organisations, both at local and national levels.  Community Channel TV visited SHEP on 17 March 2007 to film the activities at one of the "Stave Hill Volunteers Saturdays' for national broadcast via their website to help promote the activities of BTCV that runs SHEP and it has caused a lot of positive excitement in the Rotherhithe Community.

RCSF sincerely hopes that Heritage Lottery Fund will too choose to lend support to SHEP.

    All best wishes

    Subject: Stave Hill Saturdays

With Best Wishes for a Happy Christmas And A Prosperous New Year !  Thank you for all your help and support this year.

We have managed to complete a great many projects at Stave Hill this year, and this is due to you, the Stave Hill Saturdays team. Thank you for all your hard work and commitment.

The park is looking good, and the SHED really looks to be structurally complete by the beginning of March. Our next volunteer day will be Saturday February 9th. We will be working on SHED, and also on rejuvenating the entry signs.  In January, I will be sending out an email, asking for letters of support to present to the Heritage Lottery Fund grants panel, and I hope that some or all of you will feel able to write these.   There are lots of great pictures on our FaceBook page, so if you haven't joined yet, now's the time! It's easy to do, even for people as un-computer literate as me! Mike Scott has taken another series of wildlife photos, which are as beautiful and exciting as his last series...well worth a look.

Enjoy the Christmas holiday, and I look forward to seeing you in 2008!

    Best Wishes,

    Rebeka.

Subject: Praise for Southwark Council & Philip Murphy : Flytipping of Cannabis Factory on Downtown Site

    Dear Jonathon & David

Thank you very much for your prompt response emails below and helpful information.  I concur with Jonathon that it is truly heartening to see how local residents and the different agencies have succeeded in building trust and working relationship for our Common Good.

I am pleased to report that an extremely well-connected local resident and community activist involved with this incident is very happy with the service he has received from Southwark Council and the pivotal role played by Phil Murphy in particular who told me today :  "Philip Murphy is the one to congratulate on this.  I only emailed him late on Tuesday evening and the Council employees were there first thing Wednesday morning.  This is why I go through Philip because he gets things done immediately - as is the case here."  I would like to add that this is not the first time I have received such praises from local residents regarding Phil.

Southwark News has been amazingly fast in reporting this incident.  I will also help publicise this latest "Success Story" of our "Multi-Agency Community Safety Partnership" via the "RCSF Blog" as well as the next issue of "RCSF Circular" to help "Spread the Words" to share the "Good News" and to try help encourage even more People of Rotherhithe to join in our collective efforts.

Many thanks again for all your kind assistance and continual strong support.

    All best wishes

Our environmental enforcement team were the first responders and did a good job co-ordinating with the Police and Wardens support.

Like David I am not sure of the position in relation to arrests. Perhaps Inspector Johnson can provide an update. However it is great to see the good work that has developed in the area between residents and the different agencies.

Zoe Scott from our press team has the story.

    Thanks

    G'day Kam,
I can't comment on the arrest but can tell you that wardens were involved and also that the flytip was first reported by a local dog-walking resident using the councils telephone reporting system.
    Regards
    David

    Neil & Phil

I have just received a Local Intelligence Report that some caring and vigilant Rotherhithe Residents have spotted and reported the fly-tipping of some 30 Industrial Waste Bags just off the end of Downtown Road behind the bushes close to Redriff Primary School, Russia Dock Woodland and Surrey Docks Health Centre on 24-7-2007 (Tuesday) .  Reportedly these bags have found to contain cannabis plants and equipments for growing them,  Reportedly 8 Southwark Council's staff from the Environmental Crime Enforcement Team have visited the site the following day as well as a significant number of police officers.  Reportedly, a man, an ex-army officer, has been arrested for this reported incident by today, 25-7-2007 (Wednesday).  It is also my understanding that a Southwark News Reporter has visited the site today, took some photos of the police and council staff busy at work on the site and a press report is expected, most probably via the edition due for publication on 2-8-2007 (Thursday).  I intend to report our latest
"Multi-Agency Crime Fighting Partnership" Success Story and would like to seek direct confirmation from both the Police and Southwark Council before sending out my report to all the RCSF Members.  Can you please confirm the accuracy of the above-stated Local Intelligence Report  from the Police and Southwark Council perspective respectively at your earliest convenience?  Many thanks.

    All best wishes

Southwark's 2nd Dispersal Zone : The Four Squares Estate in Bermondsey, Slippers Place Estate, Kirby Estate, Millpond Estate and Pynfolds Estate from July 16 2007 (Part 1) (Updated @ 22-6-2007)

More Anti-Yob Powers … in time for Holidays

POLICE have been given more powers to deal with yobs on estates.  So-called Dispersal Zones have been set up to coincide with school summer holidays after Bermondsey residents complained about youths causing mayhem last year.

Cops will be able to break up large groups of youths and escort them home from the Four Squares Estate, Slippers Place Estate, Kirby Estate, Millpond Estate and Pynfolds Estate from July 16.  Southwark Council pushed through the order after talking to residents' groups and police about their concerns about gangs causing trouble. Superintendent David Chinchen said officers would work with youth groups to make sure kids were kept occupied during the summer holidays.

He said: "Our experience with Dispersal Zones show that generally they have a positive impact when they are required."

Councillor Jeff Hook, Southwark Council's Executive Member for Community Safety, said: "People have a right to feel safe in their community, and it is unacceptable that anybody should feel threatened by groups of people hanging around. "The Dispersal Order offers the police, council and residents an opportunity to tackle these issues swiftly and prevent serious activity from escalating."

But some community groups have raised concerns that yobs will move into other areas without dispersal zones. Southwark's Labour leader Peter John said: "It's worrying to wonder just what the effects of this will be. "Some people have been on the residents' associations for years and were at the end of their tether with the situation."
